|
|
I got another 3 day weekend! We are loading up the bus and heading to denver to a wedding. I have logged 5956 miles on 4 road trippin adventures in the bus in 2014! It's been a great year for adventures. We will take our normal route. West on 160 over Wolf Creek Pass then north on 285 though the San Luis Valley. We should be on the road with in the hour. The weather is great today and should make for a nice day of driving. I'm stoked to see how my new cooler set up works over the passes. I know pics or it didn't happen. Thanks for reading.

Have fun! I take a yearly ski trip to Colorado, but not by bus. I drive up to the mountain with my friend who is a local in his Nissan exterra.
I just think how I would drive those mountains in a bus, when people are doing 80 mph up hill and I'm going 40 mph.
Maybe it's something you get used to. My bus was originally for CO.
However my parts are getting here earlier then I expected. taking a day trip up to Road American in Wisconsin. _________________ 1978 2.0L FI Campmobile

Made it to Poncho Springs, 207 miles from home. Bus is running great!!! Oil temp has stayed right at 180* and I'm stoked on the new speakers I just installed in the doors, they bump. We got 21.22 MPG on the last tank. Next stop Denver.
All the mountains have snow covered peaks. Mox that with the fall colors and the senery is beautiful. _________________ __________

Made it! What a crazy drive this time. On the west side of Wolf Creek Pass we came across a Class A (40') RV on fire. We were there before cops, good thing I'm sure they closed the road. Climbed the pass no problem. Did most of it in 3rd but I did get to get it into 4th for a few miles. Hit the top of the pass at 180*. Just after we started the decent, we got behind an 18 wheeler going uber slow, my speedometer wasn't even moving. We get to a passing zone, can't pass because of an on comming car. But the 18 wheeler behind me starts to pass, oh shit! Luckily as he pulled along side of us he saw the car and pulled back behind us. The right around Bailey, Co we got passed but 2 different drivers on a double yellow. WTF, we were going 62 in a 55. Everyone sees a bus and assumes your gonna be crawling. As I said in the last post the bus is running great. It's been 2k since my last break adjustment and it could use an adjustment after the Jerome trip and the 4 mountain passes we crossed today. Like I said in the lat post the bus is running great. We made it 160 miles from Poncho Springs to our destination in Denver on less the. 1/2 a tank. Thanks for reading. _________________ __________

SWEET! Glad to see there's other people who drive the mountains in their buses. I live in Brighton but love going up in the high country in my bus. _________________ '65 Karmann Ghia 'vert

What method do you use to track oil temp Rich? I've been experimenting driving my bus up around HorseTooth lake here in Ft Collins with driving speeds going up hills, so I can get a idea of what kind of speeds I'd be looking at when I take mountain bike trips up to Vail, Crested Butte, ect. I'd love an accurate way to track oil temps.
Beautiful drive from your place to Denver! Sounds like you had a great time. _________________ 1975 Westy

It was a bit scary climbing at 45-50 when I was running a 1600. But no problem keeping up with the traffic with my 2109. _________________ __________

I use a VDO oil temp gauge. Speeds vary while climbing depending on the size of the hill. I just try to keep up with terrific and not down shift. Some climbs are just to much to run fourth the whole way, like Wolfie. _________________ __________

We motered all the way up here so we could make the rehersal dinner. So...I didn't stop and take a bunch of pics.
Climbing the west side of Wolfie
Snow covered peaks on the east side of the San Luis Valley
We also came across this huge fire
First place the wife wanted to stop. She came out and said "it's so crazy in there, I got overwhelmed and left with nothing"

She really came out with nothing, I thought it was quite hilarious. I think she just wanted to check it out, it is right by where we are staying. _________________ __________

Nice journey at a good time of year, East Colfax has the best dispensaries in Denver. But really...who's buying at them anymore (out of state tourists maybe)?? With all the home grown out there it's pretty much becoming free if you're connected with the "head" community. That hill outside of Bailey is really dangerous due to speeding drivers, I've had my bus pushed around more than a few times at that hill on my way to wellington lake. BTW we need to make this a record thread for "Manfred" samba handles and posts! Thanks for sharing, drive safe! _________________ Fat chick owner/operator |
