Hi everyone, As some of you might know, I've been looking for a decent ACVW to restore. Does this look like a good buy?

The guy is asking $700 for it.
It's a '74 "sun bug"
The bugging question is, Does it look restorable?

I have a theory on old cars, $1000 more now for a solid base will save you $2000 during the restoration. Wink

I think it's borderline. Too hard too tell from those pictures. His price is too steep for it though.

Based on the photos you provided, I think I'd keep looking. The rust on the roof looks like more than just a bit of patina... The corrosion looks pretty advanced on the roof. Heater channels and floorpans are undoubtedly gone.

I'd take on most anything, but this one I think even I would walk away from, and for $700. I think you honestly could do better.

Heck, even from what I can see in one of the photos, the yellow or blue one behind the one you're considering look better!

Yeah, agreed with everyone else, this one is on the line. The condition of the frame head would make/break it for me. For the Supers, you're in that strange value determination zone where a solid frame head and a good condition steering box - those two parts alone - could make it worth that price! Shocked But as a car to restore, you're looking at a LOT of work, and it pretty much takes another parts car to restore a former parts car.

X2! Do you have pictures of the cars to the sides of this one, or that whole row behind it?

Rustosis has set in. Terrible sick disease too. That car has it. Personally keep looking around.

If you're willing to travel a few hours, I know where there is a very clean/solid Standard bug body for sale for $800. Southern Indiana near Louisville.

http://louisville.craigslist.org/cto/4699118067.html

I drove past it the other day, and thought about buying it myself. Check out the wheel wells. You cant see it in these pics, but even the rockers in front of the rear wheels are solid.

Buy that and find a pan somewhere and you're in business.

Frankly and politely, if you can't tell, then you have no idea how to get this car going again. So, stay away from a project like that.

I'd normally agree, but in this case, I'm going to disagree. Wink

I mean no disrespect with this, so please don't take it the wrong way. But if you read supertrainguy's other posts, he's.. how do you say it... not a concours restoration kind of guy. Laughing
"I bought this aftermarket radio and it doesn't fit. Should I cut the dash?"
"Mount it in the glovebox." (posted 1h 30m later)
"Too late, I already cut the dash." Embarassed

...and then there is the engine build thread. Shocked

Frankly, and I mean this in a POSITIVE way - supertrainguy, a car like this is probably the IDEAL car for you to restore. If you start with a car that the majority say is junk and not worth restoring, you can do pretty much anything you want without catching so much flak for it. You can learn to weld, you can take your shortcuts, you can hack whatever you want without worrying about originality, etc, etc. If you get it going, it's one more car on the road that otherwise would have been crushed. Cool And if you talk them down (which you should), then you're almost at the break-even point for parting it out and scrapping the rest to get your money back if you end up giving up on it.

... Plus, you already have an engine for it. Very Happy

What I see isn't worth more than $200 in parts.
What I can't see are the 'A' pillars that are no-doubt rusted beyond reasonable repair. Look for drain tube woes with these later sunroof cars in your part of the world.

Also, I'd never buy a car from a junk unless I am the first on scene after it is brought in. There's a reason it's been rejected by everyone else who has seen it.

That car is a turd. Is walk away.

Though, I'd really like just one of those sport wheels to use as a spare.

It's restorable if you do body work. If you don't pass on it

So true though in the case of this car, spending an extra $1000 on a rust free bug would save him 5-8k in metal work on this rust bucket.

I say buy it before someone else sees this thread and beats you to it. The patina is awesome. I can't wait to see the build thread.

I like the lime green dune buggy in front of it -- no rust there!
