No big updates....had the stomach "bug" over the Christmas holiday, didn't really feel like doing much. Did get a couple more of the engine tins painted and have determined which ones I'll have to replace, mainly the dog house, both cylinder tins and the tin that goes in the back of the motor that the throttle cable runs through (can't remember the name of it)...I ordered a hoover bit from Awesome Powdercoat, hopefully it'll be here in the next week or so, since they were on vacation. Still haven't found anybody locally to machine my head for the larger jugs, so I'm going to have to start reaching out elsewhere. I don't care to have to ship it someplace else, but it would've been nice to be able to have it done locally.....I did get some awesome new pneumatic tools for Christmas, they'll sure come in handy once I get back to the body...more soon... Smile

Update: Found a guy in Grayson, Kentucky (20 miles away), Phil's Bug Shack that will cut the head for me....taking it next Monday...!

It’s been a few days since I’ve been able to do any work on the Beetle. Unfortunately, new years eve, my 83 year old mother slipped in her bath tub, punctured the back of her head and fractured her 2nd vertebrae. We spent the evening and stroke of the new year in the ICU of a local hospital. Fortunately, she is doing a bit better, but due to her age, she’ll be in a neck brace for at least 4 months and will be transfered from the hospital (hopefully tomorrow) to a rehab facility for an undetermined amount of time before she’ll be able to go home. We’re thankful that it isn’t worse than it could have been. So today, I tried to redirect my mind and concentrate on something else. I got the other head cleaned up and put on the motor, got everything torqued down, test fitted some other components and if I could’ve found my feeler gauge, I would’ve set the valves. But at least for now, it’s starting to look like an engine again. As you may have read before, I was planning on replacing this head because of a broken cooling fin. I acquired a replacement head only to find that when this motor was rebuilt, they had put 92mm pistons in it and had the heads cut for larger jugs. I visited a VW mechanic of 30 years today who was going to cut the replacement head for the larger jugs, but after looking at it, he recommended that I use the head with broken cooling fin. Not only was it cut for the larger jugs, but it also had larger valves that I also hadn’t noticed. He said it was a much better head than the stock head. So, I took his advice and put my replacement head back in the classifieds. Besides, you can't see the broken cooling fin anyhow. lol I also finished painting the oil cooler exhaust duct. I’m still waiting for the hoover bit that I ordered from Awesomepowdercoat.com, was hoping that it would’ve at least been shipped this week, but I’ve not gotten a confirmation from them. As for the reset of the tins, I’m going to have to replace them. The ones I have are just to far gone to repair, repaint and re-use. Looks like I’m going to need a dog house, both cylinder head tins, front plate and possibly a breast plate. I’m going to take a closer look at the breast plate that I have, but it looks to me like it’s been cut and modified. I really want to get the engine buttoned up so I can sit it aside and get back to the body. Baby steps….

Since my Beetle will be a summer time driver only, having heat will not be a concern for me. No need for heat exchangers. So I've decided to wrap my J tubes with heat wrap to help cut down on some of the heat from the exhaust. Not a big part of the project, but one less thing to do later.

A little wired after work tonight so I proceeded with the heat wrap install on the exhaust. Pretty pleased with the way that it turned out. Not sure how much it’ll subtract from the heat factor, but my biker friends swear by it. Guess time will tell.

Had some time after work tonight so I tightened up the heat wrap on the exhaust that I installed last night. Really pleased with the way it turned out. Also received the hoover bit that I ordered from AwesomePowercoat.com. Looks like it’s well made, much better than the OEM hoover bit. Only $26.00 delivered, very reasonable. Hope to get the cylinder tins that I ordered from AirCoolin parts via Ebay. Have not received confirmation about shipping yet.

Still waiting for parts! Have some parts coming from AirCoolinparts and Chirco that will hopefully be here this week. Really want to get the engine buttoned up soon so I can concentrate on the body. Last major things to get for the engine is a dual port intake and carb.

Received my new cylinder tins today that I ordered for AirCoolinparts.com. Wasn’t quite sure what to expect since I had read some negative comments concerning aftermarket parts. Thin metal, fitting issues, etc. I must say, I’m very pleased with what I received today. They appear to be well constructed, fitting was no issue, everything lined up as it should. Though I’ll still use as many OEM tins as I can get my hands on, I wouldn’t hesitate for second to order these again if I ever needed them. Whether they’ll stand the test of time, that’s yet to be determined, but for now, I’m pleased. Starting to look like a motor again. I have a bell housing tin coming from Chirco that will hopefully be here this week. Hoping that I’ll be just as pleased with it…. Smile

Kicking around the idea of which exhaust system I'll be going with. Since I won't be running heat exchangers, I think I'll be going with this system. Thoughts?

Got the bell housing tin test fitted tonight, very pleased with the way it turned out. Other than getting some new grommets, it’s complete. New throttle cable tube is on it’s way here, so the only tin I have left to finish is the dog house, rear engine and maybe the heater box tin, even though I running J pips. I’d like to use them because the protect the push rod tubes from road debris, but I’ll have to make a bracket to connect them to the J pipes. Anybody know if brackets are made for this? Also took the heat gun to the rear fender well to see how hard the 41 year old undercoating is going to be to remove. Actually came off pretty easy. As much as I hate this stuff, it did it’s job protecting the vulnerable places on this Beetle. It’ll have to wait til warm weather though, fumes quickly filled the garage and it was nasty. This will be an outside task. Also started cleaning up the starter. It worked fine before I started taking the Beetle a part, so it’ll get cleaned up and a fresh coat of paint. Also loaded up a bunch of spare parts in the ’12 Beetle to take to Oak Hill Ohio tomorrow to deliver to a friend who has some parts for me. Gonna be 54 degrees and sunny tomorrow, I plan to take advantage of it.

The rubber seals on your plug wires--the ones against the cylinder tins--do not look as if they're really sealing.

Mine are stock Bosch, and the rubber seals are not like yours. And mine are thinner and seem to take on the shape of the tins better.

Yes, those are just temp wires, I will not be using them... Smile

Replacement intake prepped, painted and installed today. The one that was on the car had a broken heat riser, so it was replace with another OEM intake that just needed a little TLC. I’m very pleased with the way it turned out. Also started the carb rebuild. I want to give a big shout out to Tim at VolkzBitz.com for supplying me with a few parts that wondered off with one of my furry four legged friends. Very much appreciated Tim! Just a few more engine tins and I’ll set aside the engine for now and concentrate on the body. So far, I’m very pleased with the way the engine is turning out. Can’t wait to hear this baby fire up again! She’s been dormant since the beginning of October!

Worked on the first non-engine piece of the Beetle in a while today. Though I guess the starter could be considered part of the motor assembly as a whole. Waiting to finish the tins on the motor, then it’ll be time to adjust the valves, set the engine aside for awhile and get back to body work. So today, I took the starter a part, cleaned it and gave it a fresh coat of paint. It worked like a charm before the Beetle was disassembled, no reason it shouldn’t work like a charm when everything is put back together.

Test fitting my new rear engine tin that I ordered for Chircoestore.com via Ebay. Not running heat, so this is exactly what I needed. Fitment is perfect and very pleased with the quality. I have quite a mixture of OEM and aftermarket tins and so far, they all match up perfectly. I’ve read where others have had issues with this, but so far, I’ve been lucky. Shroud should be here tomorrow! Also ordered a 125 piece assorted rubber grommets for automotive use. I'll be using a lot of them... Smile

Got my new dog house shroud from Chircoestore today. Again, very pleased with the quality and price, but disappointed that there are no threaded studs to mount the distributor. May look into getting a threaded insert riveter, that should take care of that problem. I’ve seen where others have used these on their rockers for running board installs. Also received the dual port intake that I had ordered, but have since come across an OEM intake. So I’ll have a spare….

Spent some time tonight installing the new dog house shroud, test fitting the rear tin and watching it snow outside. First real snow this winter. Pleased with the fitment of the dog house, especially around my new hoover bit, not so pleased with the rear tin. Like everybody else who has used these aftermarket tins, I have the same complaints. I’ve had a couple fit perfectly and a couple that have a lot to be desired. Mixing these aftermarket tins with OEM is not a good decision. Chalk it up as a learning experience. Also installed grommets in the tins where needed, along with a new throttle cable tube. Still awaiting some parts that Tim at Volkzbitz is sending me so I can finish with the carb rebuild. I’ll order the oil cooler tin, heater box tin, and sled tins some time soon and that’ll pretty much button up all of the engine work. Then it’ll be time to get back to the body.

Got the parts that Tim from VolkzBitz sent me yesterday, was able to get the carb back together. Also finished install grommets on tins where needed. Since I had to relocate the dip stick tube, the pulley tin had to be modified to slide over the dip stick tube. With a grommet in place, looks like it was supposed to be that way the whole time.
