|
|
So winter is quickly approaching here in the northeast. Last winter we got down to a nice -17F outside. Where I work, we are not allowed to bring out cell phones inside. On those cold days my phone was FROZEN to the point it wouldn't work. The wife is paranoid that I'm going to wreck the car and I HAVE TO HAVE a cell phone on me.
Does anyone have any ideas how to keep small items "warm" for 10-12 hrs in a car? |

Insulated coolers or ice chests work both ways _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Take the battery out, keep it in your pocket.
A couple years back I had morning classes and would sit in the parking lot before hand. I would turn my phone on and run as many apps as I could to make it a hand warmer. _________________ Wash your hands

The battery is your concern. Keep it with you. Also, how about asking your employer if they can arrange a storage area inside. I bet this isn't a unique problem. _________________ Feel My Pain l Sage Ad World |

iPhone, so no can do on the battery. I work on a DOE/DOD sight, so no can do on storage. I'm probably just going to get a cheap prepaid phone to have something this winter that if it does get destroyed by the cold, I won't feel bad. Although the insulated ice chest idea with a reusable hand warmer might work... |

They could if they wanted. I know of one secret gov agency that has a rack of lockable compartments for phones in their lobby before you pass through the security check. _________________

Get a deep cycle battery, charge the phone while you're at work. That should be enough to keep it warm. Battery lifespan would be terrible though.
Just get a cooler and line it with fiberglass. _________________ Wash your hands

To think that many of us have lived for a very long time wihout having a cell phone taped to our legs.
I would just leave it at home. You will be fine. |

I agree! It's the misses that had panic attacks when I leave the house without it. I dislike having a leash, but it does come in handy when the bus breaks down and I need a tow. |

Solar trickle charger?
If you have a big car battery, a thermo-electric ice chest can keep it warm. |

Try a thrift store shopping experiment. See if an insulated soft-sided lunch box (foil-ish stuff inside) will keep a can of pop at room temperature in the car. I'd bet the small confines of that cooler would more than be sufficient for a phone. What you don't want is something too big- so limit the airspace around the phone without wrapping it- cause it will cook itself. _________________

Leave it home and remind the missus that you survived without her or a phone for a long time. If she freaks about the phone what will she do when something really goes bad? You know in high school these days control issues like this are taught as being a sign of domestic abuse... _________________ my59: Well son, my grandfather died before I got to drive it, so does that answer your question?

Another option would be a genuine rugged phone with an extended operating temperature range.
Example: The Cat B100, with a rated temp range of -25°C (-13°F) to 55°C (131°F)
(For comparison, the iPhone 6/6+ is 32° to 95° F (0° to 35° C).)

get a small cooler and microwave a couple ordinary potatoes when you leave for work. The potatoes will radiate heat for a long time, and the insulated cooler will keep m warm. This is a trick used in the olden days to keep your hands and feet warm on cold days while riding in a car or school bus. _________________ Fritz Custom Products
