Alt wiring would be the same. The alt could be made by either Bosch(most likely) or Motorola. All you have is power and exciter. If the Alt has 3 terminals for the plug, the 2 large ones are power out and the small one is the exciter. |

mine is a motorola. it is not actually in a rabbit i have the motor installed in my 74 baja bug. so the small post will run from the battery to the post. the two large posts will run together and back to the battery? (all the positive side of the terminal obviously |

You need the exciter wire hooked up correctly to get the alt to put out voltage. Try google or looking at the wiring diagrams for nearly any car. |

i have googled it for this alternator. cannot find anything. or for vw rabbits 1.6l gasoline engines. i find plenty for the diesel alt which has a completely different post layout. your answer should be enough for me to work off of. i have the exciter wire hooked up properly i just need to run the other two posts back to the battery and the post located lower on the alt will run to my charging indicator on my dash. |

Not sure what the third terminal is for. When I get home in a couple of days, I can check my Bently Manual. |

that would be great! it has one labeled D+ (the small one), two labeled B+ (the big ones) and one that is down lower that is a small post by itself. |

D+ is the exciter, B+ is battery/output. If the one by itself is a threaded stud, it is just a stud for the plug retainer or a ground, depending upon where it is on the alt. |

I hooked up to d+ and nothing happened Hooked into the small plug on the bottom and had it not charging still. Grounded the alt an now have a weak charge will swap the power wire back to d+ and see if it charges better |

Have you had alt tested? Could also be a faulty voltage regulator. |

i beleive it is running now. swapped the exciter wire to the small post up top and the problem is fixed. i believe. i will hook my multimeter up to it tonight when i get home. the problem I was having is that the alt does not close the circuit until it is in rotation i was testing the posts with the ignition turned on and not started. it was a rookie mistake. |
