I have an opportunity to swap over a complete '86 forged lower control arm setup to an '84 that currently has the earlier stamped ones. I was thinking about the spindles/uprights alone being suitable for a future Big Brake Kit, but I was wondering if I shouldn't just swap it all over. Thoughts?

yes swap it all over, but replace all the bushings first, and the ball joints.
you'll feel like you are driving a new van Smile

Thanks! I was afraid of that. Laughing

I actually haven't driven it yet (dead Wasserboxer - Subaru swap in progress), but I have already reworked the entire front suspension with lift springs, all new brakes, cleaned, repainted, etc.

Then this '86 popped up. Been sliding back and forth on my creeper stealing from one and giving it to the other. Working a power steering upgrade while I'm at it.

yes swap the whole lot over, sway bar the lot.

i'd even go as far as changing the steering rack bushings, the white line ones from T3 technique, and look at the rubber doughnuts on the steering linkage.

you'll be amazed at some of the things i've seen under peoples vans, and they think all is good under there.
then after it's all been changed out they are shocked as to how well they drive, after thinking there was nothing wrong with the van.

Also, make sure to go with MOOG or Lemfoerder brand LOWER ball joints. T3Technique carries the MOOG's. Slightly more money than Febi or the like but worth it.

What advantage does the cast LCA have over the stamped one?

When talking differences between the stamped and cast Syncro LCAs, I prefer the feel of the cast units.
The geometry is different and you can not easily lift the late Syncros with cast parts.
The stamped versions and Burley's aftermarket arms allow for 2"+ lifting if you are so inclined.

I enjoy a 1" lift and cast lower arms on most of my Syncros.
Absolutely none of the issues reported often by others trying for more of a lift.

I also have plenty of the late cast 2wd arms saved with the spindles and late brakes.
A great conversion that will bring an early van up too speed and allow for Big Brake kits and power steering.

Good info. I do, in fact, have 2" GW lift springs over the stamped LCA's. I was considering bringing over just the '86 spindles to enable the big brake options, but I think, for now, I will just retain the parts and make a future decision...
