Was looking for the newbie introduction forum to say hi but couldn't find it. So hi from Toronto, Canada!

Picked up a 1966 Ghia this weekend and am looking forward to getting dirty getting it road worthy again and interacting on thesamba. I'll see if I can attach a pic.

Originally Bermuda Blue.
Brakes should be good, PO said he did them, I'll double check.
Clutch is frozen after sitting 20 years, hope to free them up.
Pans and battery tray need replacing, and a hole or two around the windows.
Etc...

Gonna be fun!

Welcome aboard! The Samba is an addiction, just the same as these damn cars! 66 is a great year! Does yours still have the dash trim?

Thanks for all the warm welcomes.

I may have the dash trim, need to dig through the boxes of spares. One piece is still in place. I'm so new to this, but I believe the dash trim is about an 1" wide, right? BUT, someone trimmed the dash to fit a modern stereo in at some point. That's upsetting.

Gonna be some fun times ahead!

Welcome to the samba, I have a particular fondness for the '66 model. Look forward to hearing about your exploits.

Just a tip you probably already know, but Don’t throw anything away! At least not until you have a suitable/usable replacement in hand.

The dash trim is a one-year only item, as is the emergency flasher and both are rare and expensive. Even if your trim is in poor shape with pieces missing, hold on to it as you may have to fix it or use it to make a replacement. There was someone here doing aluminum repros for about $200 but I don’t think they are available anymore.

Post more pics!

I have no plans to toss anything yet, I have a good amount of garage space.

My Ghia project is going to be a weekend project at my shop 2 hours out of Toronto. I will try to get some quality pics next time I see her.

I sure hope that dash trim will reveal itself in one of the boxes. I haven't a clue where the emergency flasher is even located. I skimmed the online owners manual and couldn't find reference to it either. Neutral

Am I right that the lighting in this pic is wrong? The engine is running with the lights on, but the brakes are not depressed. Aren't the running lights at the bottom of the tail lights and brake lights the centre?

A few significant rusty spots beyond the pans and battery tray.

That's right. Running at the bottom, Brake in the middle, Turn flashers on top. Moving the connectors will sort that out easily enough.

The flasher is between the Lights and Wiper controls, just below the trim.

I'm not near the car now, but I think I would've recalled that knob (very flashy Wink). In your pic, is that the ignition below the speedo and dash? My ignition is on the right side of the steering wheel in the dash.

WRT the flasher, would there be variations from country to country? I believe my originated from the US.

Thanks Nicholas. I'm excited to dig deeper this weekend.

That photo happens to be for a '66 cabriolet and the lock you see for the front trunk release. A coupe has an ivory coloured pull for that function and in the same location. You can lock the doors and close the windows in a coupe but with the top down the villains needs to be locked out of a cabriolet's trunk. Karmann came up with this which has been a cabrio feature for every model year since the start.

The ignition key switch is as you describe, inboard of the steering wheel, usually. However I have seen photos where cars with a combination gear-lock and ignition key-switch set up have the ignition switch by the base of the gear lever and the emergency flasher knob where the ignition key is normally placed. Plainly not the case with your car.

There are variations. The US versions have the flashers and I think that is stipulated in the US design rules for that year. The European versions sometimes do and sometimes don't have the flashers. I think the flashers were offered as an option back in the day and I think the photos of the cars described earlier with the gear lock and flasher in the ignition hole are european delivered cars.

If you need to get a replacement flasher relay, Wofsburg west have a repro version which has modern innards but looks the same outside. However it is designed to run on 12Volts. Otherwise, to find a 6 volt version you'll need to search the samba advertisements for a 6 volt "9 prong box" which do show up from time to time, but come with the risk of being a dud. Not many people know how to , or bother to test them.

For some reason, the 66 owners manual appears to be euro only. (No emergency flasher, no North American spec bumpers). I went looking for one for this side of the pond, but there wasn't one.

Car doesn't look too bad, though once you start in I'm sure you'll find a few unhappy surprises. Any plans to make it a runner to enjoy it a bit before you dig in? Or is it too far gone for that?

I have 3D scans of the trim set. If you wish you can order 3D prints of them. With those you only have to chrome plate them.

I'll shoot out a PM. Would be great to have a fellow enthusiast near, especially with the same year Ghia!

3D printing is so amazing! I will def keep that in mind. This weekend, I'm going to go thru my boxes and see what I still have.

I would love to drive it for a while so I will try to get her on the road soon. The heater channels appear solid, but new pans are in order. But the body appears solid.

Going to snap more pics this weekend.

Thanks for everyone's help and suggestions!
