I have and engine a friend gave me years ago number B5 005 403. Out of wanting a new project I decided to tinker with it. Went to see it it was free spining and it would turn 180 degrees and lock up. I removed the rockers from the heads and the rods hoping that would free it, up no dice. Also I have the distributer removed. Planing on pulling the heads next. Any thoughts as to what could be causing this. Any feedback is appreciated.

Loosen up the flywheel before proceeding to take the engine apart the rest of the way.

shot in the dark but something may be on top of one of the pistons or bad crank.

If it's sat long enough it could be a lifter stuck in its bore.

I'm hoping there is just something in the cylinder. Is therea way to unstick the lifter without splitting the case?

If it is stuck, it is probably rusty. Rusty steel parts are not good for moving at high speed, due to added friction and heat produced can quickly eat up parts. Best to not cut corners and just take it all apart....

Yeah your right on that. I did keep oil in the case just to try to keep things lubed just in case I did ever want to do anything with it should the lifter still be stuck sitting in oil? I know dumb question just covering my basis.

Sump oil level is lower than the lifters. So unless you filled the case completely.....

Bought a 1963 SC that had been parked shortly after engine rebuild eight years before. Parked due to rocker arm stud pulled out. Changed oil and got 50 miles down range when the rusty crankshaft ate up the main bearings....

Likely a rusted cylinder. But, don't go rotating that engine too much with the distributor removed. You could push the distributor drive up and jam it , which could then damage the brass gear inside the engine.

It could be a lifter. But since the distributor is out, my money is on the distributor pinion drive.

With no history and the corrosion in the one head chamber, would just tear it down the rest of the way and rebuild it for that rainy day....
