whenever I take a hard left with a full tank of gas, fuel pours down the side of the car. Should there be a rubber seal on the gascap? it appears to be metal on metal, but fits tight...appears to be a venting cap, could that be the issue? TIA

There is a gasket that sits on the inside of the gas cap. The replacement ones are very stiff and hard to get in. Maybe the Brothers know how to get it in.

I have those factory brick red gaskets. Got them from Germany years ago. Never tried to install one.

I do have the original cap. Could it be that the rubber "valve" type thing in there is dried out/torn ?

Has anyone come up with a fix for this?

Upon left turns, fuel is spraying out of my cap! I can look over and watch the fuel spraying out. (Doors off.)

The red seal is there and not cracked, though I don't know how good of a job it is doing.

Is there some piece of the cap further inside it that could be leaking?

Are there any good quality replacements available?

I couldn't find a replacement seal/gasket either so I ended up buying a new gas cap. You can get them at thethingshop.com. Have you checked all your hoses under the hood for leaks? Have you also checked the seal for the filler cap on the tank?

Not sure what you mean by filler cap on the tank.

The gas cap, along with the metal line from front to back, are the only two parts of the fuel system that are original. Every single thing was replaced-tank, vent lines, carb rebuilt, seals etc etc when I got the car running a couple months ago.

You can see the fuel spraying out from up there on turns.

I pulled the cap this morning and see that there is some plastic innards-perhaps that is cracked and that is what the gas is spilling from.

Opinions on The Thing Shop regular vs. locking gas caps?

I did see one comment in searching that called their locking gas cap a piece of crap. But maybe that was an old style or something.

I have both. It is my opinion the locking gas cap from TTS is not a piece of crap. However, I do find it to be a pain in the neck to unlock and lock. It would be easier if the key were totally separate from my Thing key (which has a couple other keys with it, too), but the cap key is tiny and easy to lose.

I use the stock gas cap that came with Thing most of the time. If I think it might be left alone too long near some potentially not-so-nice people, I put on the locking cap for the day.

Post-posting edit: Just to be clear, my "regular" gas cap may or may not be from the TTS. My locking one is from TTS.

I bought the replacement gas cap from the Thing Shop and it works fine. I didn't get the one with the lock, even though TheThingShop says they are superior in quality. I just didn't want to have to mess with a key and having to lock/unlock. It also doesn't look stock.

I made a seal for mine, and it fixed the problem immediately. Only problem is, the seal isn't holding up. I guess I'll try and find some material that holds up better than an old innertube...

Look at your cap itself. Are the three bent in tabs too far out? Use some needle nose pliers to bend them back in very carefully. Check your filler neck. Are the sides worn or bent unevenly? Use a pair of needle nose pliers to even them out. If the gasket is smooth all the way around and has no cracks then it should seal properly as long as the above mentioned cap and neck are properly aligned. You can get some engine gasket material and make your own using door knob hole drill bits and a slow turning drill.

LOL because we are some cheap bastages. The money we save making a gasket, we could spend on a cup of coffee

If you want to try a factory gasket, let me know, I will send you one. I never had to replace one, so I don't know how hard they are to replace.

I have tried a number of times and have broken the red gasket in half each time. A few years ago, some Thing lover figured out that a standard bathtub drain gasket is close to the same size and serves as a fuel resistant rubber gasket... I seem to remember that the gasket cost way less than $5

Or a top and windows!

I made the mistake of driving the Thing to work today. When I left the house, it looked sunny and the weather indicated only a slight chance of rain.

But I live in a bit of a valley, so I didn't notice the clouds to the West.

I got wet on the way to work. lol

Can't turn left? Your name wouldn't happen to be Zoolander would it? Laughing

As for your problem, I went with a drain gasket and cut it to size with a pair of scissors. It's worked great for years and they guy at Home Depot even gave it to me for free.
