That's a really cool oil filter tap! Looks like they may run a plug in from the end to separate the old passage. With a different return it would be a nice way to do it for a 356 Style by-pass filter too! But that's for a type 1. Yeah I would wait to buy the more expensive new parts until they are needed. The Thing to do is to find a good case. I found this one for $125 but have sunk another $400 or more into it for machine work. It's off at " http://www.rockyjennings.com/ " getting new bronze lifter bores now.
But now is a good time to get any used parts your going too use and or tools. I just sent off for a used alternator for mine so it can be a turn key complete engine. There are a lot of different ways to do full flow oil filtering this one has the pump outlet plugged and uses a full flow pump cover to direct the oil to the filter then the case has been taped for the return. Not sure what one is best on a type 3.

That is the easiest way to run oil lines for a type 3 without a collection of fittings to get it around the fan housing
