Will be ordering a full set of gauges for my beetle tomorrow, I have a 1600i engine and i would like to know which sender do I need, what size and if I need some adapter to do a complete installation.

Also, where is the best place to install the senders on these engines?

Tach http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=VDO-333-051

Cyl head temp http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=VDO-310-901

Oil Temp http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=VDO-310-012

Volt http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=VDO-332-041

Oil pressure http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=VDO-150-030

Thanks.

At the CPI1 site just type in "gauge sending" in the search bar. It will take you to every sending unit you'll need. Or you could just call them for help.

I did search and found them and i called them last night and the guy didn't know what I need. I told him the gauges I wanted but he doesn't know what size thread I need, I don't know that either, and I don't know where to install the senders on this car.

email John if you need help. The best place for temp senders is debatable and has been discussed, a lot. Like a lot. In short, put it wherever but use it as a reference. For the CHT, it is said that #3 will be the hottest so it's the best to watch.

You need a t for the pressure sender so you can use your stock one on the idiot light. Don't only use a two pole sender.

For oil pressure sender you need one with 10x1 mm threads or 1/8 NPT will work... I prefer a dual sender where one part runs gauge and other part allows idiot light to work...

Tach just needs 12 volt (switched - ignition) and ground plus a wire to negative (#1) of coil...

Volt meter needs a switched 12 volt supply to positive terminal and a ground...

All will need switched 12 volts (off dash lighting) and ground for instrument lighting...

For oil temp sender, depended where/how you want to mount sensor...

For cylinder head temp, most common type is one that goes under a spark plug...

This site may be better help then CIP1...

Thanks Dale.

Where would u locate the oil pressure sender, I will definitely go with a dual sender, its in my cart right now. Should be this one right, dual sender and 80psi with m10x1 http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=VDO-360-006

For the oil temp I found this and I like it, is pricey but it should work well http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=C31-115-181-113CSP
And this would be the oil temp sender I would need to use with the new sump plate http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=VDO-323-055

Oil pressure sender looks incorrect (0-80 psi) ... According to your first post, gauge you are ordering is 0-100 psi...

As for installing oil pressure sender, you remove the stock oil pressure idiot light switch (sender) and replace it with dual sender... Wire according to instructions with gauge or sender...

Had not seen this plate before... Interesting....

http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=C31-115-181-113CSP

Oil temp sender seems to be correct.... IF you use plate above...

Sorry for the ignorance, but where is the sender location on the 1600cc engine?
Would I also need an adapter to be able to install it?

The plate is cool but the fins won't line up if you're running a deep sump. Crying or Very sad

Idea The sales person was correct that he would need to know exactly what your looking for.

I have an old VDO catalog (former business days) and I tried to match up what your trying to accomplish...will attempt to help here.

As a suggestion the white face Guages would be a lot easier to read at night as the black face and the small bulb does not alluminate enough as I have both black and white thus my experience.

The Tach you want is Okay'.
Head temp Guage would be a waste unless you have a big engine.
Volt meter...Yes or NO on that one...toss up matter of opinion.
Oil Temp...YES but you need a matching sender (numbers stamped)
Oil Pressure...YES but you will need a matching sender. (numbers stamped)
There is a single post and a dual post pressure sender (use DUAL)
With the oil gauges you will need the brass fitting that screws in to the current oil hole that both OIL TEMP and OIL PRESSURE sender attach to.

The Guages will have a installation paper inside showing what is needed

My OLD book does not show the numbers you posted thus cannot help there.
They do update or supercede occasionally.

Oil pressure sender is the little switch just below distributor on left side of engine block with one wire connected to it.... No adapter needed, sender should fit into block as it is 10x1mm threads...

This graphic shows position with a dual sender already installed...

IF you use single pressure sensor and wish to retail the original stock oil pressure switch for idiot light you would end up with something like this...

Thanks HRVW, I was able to find the senders I need and the correct thread to match the engine oil port, thanks to Dale. Will be going with the new sump plate I found.

That definitely would be handy when installing all the gauges.

That gauge is funny, I wouldn't like to see a gauge like that in my conversion van or explorer. They are gas hogs. Thankfully my gas gauge is working.

PostPosted: Fri Mar 20, 2015 10:36 am    Post subject: single vs dual post oil sender Reply with quote

I am currently installing a temp and pressure gauge in my bug and I got a smoking deal on a dual post pressure sender.

My question is can I use the dual post sender and just use the one post that I need and use my original idiot light sender? or do I have to get a single post to use my OE unit?
