Heater temperature control. I am wanting to improve the temperature control system on the BN4 heater on my Thing and was wondering about using the electronic control off of a Type 4 verses the cable control which is stock on a Thing. Anyone see why this couldn't be made to work? Any great obstacles to doing so?

An explanation of how the Type 4 control works would be nice.

Wild-one....are you speaking of the green dash knob with the spring loaded 10 minute timer?

What level of temp control are you thinking about achieving?
I guess in other words where is your system lacking for what you need?

Originally I thought temp control sucked on my 411 and 412. I eventually found out that there are a lot of little details to look at to make sure its actually putting out the heat that it should.
A big part was fuel flow and complete fuel combustion.

The other issue is that the circuit in the controller is set by the knob and is looking for a specific temperature cutoff signal from the thermocouple in the heater ducting. Sometimes that TC is off. I have played with ballasting one leg or another with only limited usefulness and success. ...but it is a method.

Also the main temp firing probe that sticks Into the chamber can be off with age and can cycle firing up and down too quickly so some particular settings will give you hot and cold ups and downs instead of a steady heat.

The original Thing set up just uses a bimetallic spring to turn the fuel pump on and off. This can cause wide temperature swing as the pump will be provide full fuel for a couple of minutes followed by a several minutes of no fuel. It is common for the one relay to trip into the cold setting when the fuel is cut off and thus may cause the "no start" circuit to trip killing power to the heater control circuit before the thermostat decides to provide power to the pump again.

I was figuring that by using the Type 4 temperature control system I might get much more even heat regulation.

I think you should be able to. I had no idea that the thing heater was that simple. On the surtwce it looks very, similar to whats in the 411/412. The ones in the type 4 cars put out, very, even heat as long as you are not under or over fueling.....and thas usually just a car3ful fuel pump adjustment. Ray
