So I noticed that my metal fuel line that goes from the tank to the engine is under the pan. My car sits really low and I noticed that the line has a few scrapes on it. Im guessing it has hit things before. Is it suppose to be on the outside of the pan? If not where?

No, it is supposed to be inside the frame tunnel (centre). It enters near the base of the gas tank where the frame head is exposed, and exits on the drivers side, left frame horn.

He probably did that due to the original leaking inside the tunnel. There's a link or several where people replaced the fuel line inside the tunnel w/great pictures illustrating the work. This is the way you should repair it, put it back in the correct location.

The Factory outlines an alternative method in the Service Manual...
http://www.socalautoparts.com/product_info.php/rob...rs-p-16767

...sorry, no pic's, but it basically has you run an external pipe through the bulkhead to the inside the car on the right side, then continue along the bottom of the tunnel, much like the brake pipe is but on the other side. It exits out the back near the Battery cable, then crosses over the yoke and along the left frame fork. Use grommets where it enters/exits the body, and clamp it down some way every foot or so.
Good thing about using this method is you can upsize the pipe to 5/16" or 3/8" to feed a thirsty motor Smile

Seems like if the Bentley states this it must be an acceptable practice Question

not as safe along the floor inside, if it leaks...... Tunnel is likely safest place for the metal gas pipe. keeps you from the gas, and protects it, under car protects you from gas, but may increase likely hood of leak from impact.

Mine isn't exactly great either but that's because I intentionally made it low bandwidth... it was one of the first such images I ever put up, 10 years ago.

The alternative method via the service manual is about as simple as it gets. You can buy stainless steel tubing and run one solid piece to the rear. If this is a daily driver, I recommend this route. If you are doing a restoration, put it back in the tunnel

I've replaced the brake line twice and both times took about half a day, working slow and easy to make sure nothing got X-threaded but that's not a concern with gas line. Go straight for high quality stainless as this is not something you want to do with cheap tubing unless you like to practice. The location lends itself to dampness if it's a driver or you have leaks in the car

So when replacing it should I put in a wider fuel line? Eventually I will be rebuilding my 2180 with electronic fuel pump and 48 webers.
