Hey folks,
I've done a little reading, but wanted to post the situation also. The situation is, I lose the ability to easily slide into 1st and 3rd. This occurs occasionally when I get off the highway and I realize I'm not able to downshift. There is a resistance to just dropping in. It feels like I'm jamming into something and I can't feel it grab, but somehow it does. 1st is more of a pain and sometimes I'll start out in 2nd. Eventually it magically drops in again, 1st and 3rd are like normal until my next venture on the highway going 60-70 mph.
I'll have to have somebody shift through the gears while I'm down there and check the coupler. I just had the bushing done in there as well as parts under the shifter in the bus.
Any ideas besides broken parts in front getting in the way and somehow moving around at high speeds? _________________ 84 Wolfsburg Edition Westy |

Could have a broken support in the nose cone or a selector ball falling apart _________________

Well, you first check all the parts outside of the tranny for wear like the forward shift rod bushing as well as the coupler. Another thing to check is the reverse lockout plate for being broken or installed incorrectly. After that the next thing would be to drop the transmission and check the ball in the nose cone. The bracket in there could also be broken. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

or clutch or pilot bearing or syncros or wrong gear lube _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

At the transmission and coupler connection there's a rubber dust boot that fits on the coupler and slides on the nose cone. There a hole in the boot that fits over the grub screw which over time tears and allows the boot sticks on the nose cone and turns making the hole/notch and grub screw go out of line causing 1st and 3rd gear to feel squishy and not 'grab' into gear.
Shift rod sealing boot:
