Sorry for the off topic stupid question but why are the radio buttons LMMUU?

Hi Jesse,

They stand for long, middle and ultra shortwave bands. European standard then. I won't be actually powering it up, just for show.

Rear bumper installed. Less obvious are the wheel studs. The CSP front disc kit comes with 14mm studs, so the standard vw lug nuts can't be used. I've had the rear drums changed to 14mm studs as well so that it is the same front and rear.

Sealant around the edges of the new mirrors...

And finally some dynamat to keep it a little quieter.

Very beautiful colour on your car, Angus. I think mine was that colour but much faded when I found it.

I'm going to wait to see what your radio looks like when it's fitted before I install mine for "show".

Finally the converted genny has been finished! Had to buy a second genny as the first guy stuffed it up, but at least it will allow the engine to be put together and fired up! It's now an Australian Made Bosch , where it would have had a German one originally. It didn't have the original one when I bought it though, it was one from an oval era car.

It's a nice colour, nice enough for me to deviate from the original pearl white!

Here is a couple of photos with the radio temporarily installed, before the knobs got painted but you get the picture.

Genny installed, engine together! Seems to be a fault with the ignition kit, no spark. At least I know it has oil pressure from cranking it over.

That is a unique and beefy looking linkage you have there. What is it?

Standard Riechert linkage kit. Riechert was a German tuning company from back in the day. I bought a partial kit which didn't have the linkage. It also had Mann oil bath air filters. I managed to find that Berndt Riechert is still around, selling any remaining stock I guess. He must be in his 80s now, I spoke to him a couple of times, and another sambanista (Udo) helped make it all happen as I think Australia was a step too far for Berndt to deal with!

He had two linkage styles, this one which just picks up the generator mounting set screws, or another which required welding a bracket to the fan housing. Both just use the standard accelerator cable. I preferred this one as like all other mods I have done it is bolt-on, completely reversible to stock if desired.

These air filters are the normal Riechert ones, I may still try using the Mann oil bath ones, although they are a little taller so may foul on the deck lid springs. Carbs are 28PCI.

Thanks for the details. Very nice engine set up...I cant tell but looks like an 019 dist with a period brown cap, generator mounted regulator...those look like single throat carbs but not Kadrons. Very nice.

Yes 019 distributor, Solex 28PCI carbs. Regulator is a standard bosch 12V unit. Has to be mounted 90 degrees to normal as the mounting tabs are different to the 6V ones.

Hi Angus, it is looking good. Can you show how you mounted the front number plate without drilling holes in the bumper?
X2 I've still got cable ties on mine.
Nicholas

The mount is one I bought through Rudiger at vintagecarparts.de ( from memory ), I can get his details if you are interested. They pick up the bumper bolts so pretty neat and tidy. I'll take some closer photos next week when I'm down.

Was down today, some pretty ordinary photos of the mount. It doesn't pick up the bolts as I said above, actually just clamps onto the bottom trailing edge of the bumper bar. They were a bit of a impulse buy when I was putting a list together from Rudiger huber.

Another significant milestone today, got the motor running!

Voltage drops, dodgy fuel pump etc conspired against us, but good to prove it ok. Was rebuilt by an old vw guru over 10 years ago, but has never fired up before! Warning lights both out so oil pressure and charging seem ok also.

The dual carbs need tuning, only had a rough tune so far.

Last bits going on. Front indicators complete, bonnet not bolted on yet until final wiring completed. Waiting for the gauge chrome trims to come back from metal polisher to complete the wiring.

Rear licence lenses are in, wiring to 3rd brake light run to the rear window vent. Not sure about the licence plate surround at the rear, it covers up a raised white edge trim on the plate so may remove it yet.

Windows and interior are waiting for all the chrome/anodised bits to come back from repairs/polishing/chroming. Frustratingly close to the end!

The windscreen rubber metal trim has finally come back, so Phoebe can head off to the upholsterer.

Needed those for the headlining to be installed. Shouldn't take too long, Kevin Ferguson has made the complete interior so it just needs fitting/installation. Not too much left to do now, hopefully be driving it soon!

Thanks Nicholas, it certainly is a hard slog to finish these cars. My wife will be pleased I can take all the glass out from under our bed finally!

My wife has got around to calling herself my "first wife", with my Ghia my "second wife". Or is it the other way around?

PS Good to see your car so close to the finish, Angus. As a one-time marathon runner, I can tell you that you get to the stage where you just want to get to the finish. And then, like magic, all the pain disappears and is forgotten.

Hi Chris, never been a marathon runner, but have done some long bike rides (longest 300km in a day) so know that feeling! Hopefully the pain will disappear over the next few weeks.
