I'm doing a Body Off resto of the pan. - Found that the p.o. never put a body seal on the pan. - Anyway, what kind of bolt is supposed to be on the shock tower (see pic). On one side is a kind of carriage bolt with the unthreaded portion too large to fit thru the appropriate pad. The other side was just a regular bolt with a crazy washer on it.

According to this:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=475819

It's a 10mmx1.5 25mm length bolt.

One side of mine had a lock washer. One side had a regular washer.

The head of this bolt is 17mm.

Question for you though - how thick is that piece of rubber?

Thanks

On each side there should be two of these, one above and one below the bracket fitted on the inner wing

There should be a steel sleeve passing through these rubber spacers and the body mount bracket, this way there is no steel-to-steel contact between body and pan at this point

Demios is the only supplier I've found (so far) showing the correct parts matching what I've just removed from my car. Most just show the rectangular pad and no spacer.

Dodgy, I went back and looked at what I removed from one side. The picture shows the bolt, and on closer inspection, the spacer. They appear to be fused from the ravages of time. I have other pads of the right thickness, and I should be able to fasten a spacer.

Yes that looks right, but possibly the bolt should be a little bit longer?
I think the threaded hole in the shock tower isn't blind, and there should be a minimum of 1x to 1.5x diameter thread engagement for full strength.

Dodgy,

Thanks again for the info that I was needing. - I spent all day and got the body back on and bolted to the chassis. All my hardware was stainless steel. In fact I got it from a fellow there in the U.K.

Anyway, I was able to remove the spacer from the bolt and wire brushed all the threads. I measured the length of the spacer and then made another to match. I've got this bucket full of old sockets and I was able to match up the width. I carefully cut thru the socket which gave me a second spacer. I matched up the pads from some new stock, and it worked out great.

Thanks again.... Rich

Care to share who? I'll be looking for similar hardware soon...

Your rubber spacers are in much better condition than mine. Can you let me know the thickness? I haven't decided whether to buy or make replacement spacers yet.
