I have a 1970 Bug . With the clutch pushed down/engine running . Either at a stop , or rolling - I get a tapping sound . Almost sounds like light backfire but feels mechanical . In the sense that I can feel some mechanical movement . I knocking sound I suppose . The other problem is one I encounter a small bump in the road , On the right rear portion of vehicle , I get a quick snap sound . I don't know if the shock back there is bad . I know , often people think it may be a shock , but many times is something else . Thanks in advance . Any help ? John Question

I have the same sound in my clutch. Kind of a light knocking, not really rhythmic at all. I've felt main bearing knock before and this doesn't feel like that. I was surmising it is the disc rattling a little bit.

As for the snap noise I haven't a clue

It looks like your Dad got his money's worth out of the Bug . Yeah , I knew it had to be clutch area related . My health has improved so pulling the engine
won't be a big deal . I pulled my first engine around 1983 . I don't know if I even used a jack . John

I sure did . The two lower engine bolts were finger tight . I could not feel the two top bolts . I removed the shroud . There was a bolt put in backwards with no nut . And the left side had no bolt . I got it all back together and cranked all the fasteners down . Less leak and runs good . And the wipers were out of proper calibration . The Vw repair shop guy wrote on the service ticket "Needs new wiper motor " And a new switch . Maybe they should have just got a new car !!!! Thanks - John

Wow! Good catch on the nuts. I think your VW mechanic needs to find a new profession or at the very least needs a vacation. My pet peeve is smart-alecks, but then I am one myself

Very Happy
