Dear all

Thank you for all of your responses

We are delighted to be filming with Bill in the coming weeks

Just for your information going forward, we have made over 100 episodes of our show without incident or damage of any kind, and this segment of the show is a necessity for us and will not be cut. As stated, we are also fully insured for all activities undertaken and our crew has a vast amount of experience in safe and successful filming of this nature

We are very aware that this a gracious aid kind use of a contributor's time, and we make every effort to ensure it is a positive experience. As a British crew, there may be some cultural differences in how we seek to interact with contributors, and I should apologise if any of my comments gave you cause for concern

I have worked in TV for many years and am all too aware that some people have had bad experiences in similar situations Whilst I understand it is only my word on a forum, I can assure you that our production company is committed to the highest standards possible in everything we do, in front of the camera, and behind the scenes.

I'm glad to see that you are all staunchly supportive and protective of your friends' interests, and the community as a whole

We are all very excited to be featuring a Thing on our show- we now have viewing figures around 100 million worldwide, so hopefully this will further increase interest and enthusiasm for the model. I hope we can do justice to this car, and make an enjoyable and informative episode for you all to see

You are most welcome to contact me directly at any time should you have any questions about the project

Best wishes to you all
James

That's outstanding. Perhaps even unique.

I heard that in Britain a film crew has an 8 hour work day and beer with lunch. If true, a very positive cultural difference!

I shouldn't be having fun at your expense, James. You've been nothing but cordial in spite of our angst and fanaticism. Cheers to you and Bill, and best wishes for a positive experience on both sides.

I think nthat the angst and fanaticism comes not from James or his request, but from the fact that in this country, the efforts of many American producers to get away with murder in the name of the almighty dollar is the priority.

In the 1970s, I was a video producer for one of the Big Three and I was able to charm an entire supermarket full of shoppers to help us for practically free, because we had a tight budget. We paid all people a nominal sum and gave them a professional photo of themselves, semi-portrait as a thank-you. The publicity which the independent market got was great, as well.

It's all in how you present it, and what you present.

The offer always has to show respect, explain the situation and expect that some people will be concerned about their property, in the case of a car.

I'm not sure I see where you're going here. Are you suggesting that when a production company takes advantage of somebody in a pleasant way, that that makes them less greedy than if they were a-holes about it?

When I joined this site I thought it was to learn about Things and How to work on them etc. Now I see it is to try and tell me what how people try and rip you off. I'm 70 years old 22 year Air Force Vet, Two tours in NAM. I think I can take care of myself. Why don't you have a separate trend on How people rip people off. It is Our Thing and we can do what we please with it. And we will.

I never meant to indicate otherwise, and I'm sorry if my post came off that way. My advice was given with your best interest at heart. Really.

As a television producer I think it is disingenuous to ask for a free valuable prop car. I just came back from a shoot in Toronto, Canada and we needed a set of bagpipes for a very well-know TV personality. As difficult as it was to find one, we rented from a private owner. My own car has been featured in two TV commercials and a music video, and every time the producers have offered money and damage insurance.

We had a great time and had a lot of fun with the guys. No damage and we were well taken care of. Hope this exposes the 181 a lot more. Everything went perfect. All I saw was smiles on Simon's face everytime they came in to put more cameras on the car.

We were up at Silverwood store on 138 and it was cold. We took the first pictures up at the Cleghorn staging area.

The Wheeler Dealer's FB page posted what appears to be their Southern California Thing build on the beach. It looks like they did a good job!

The episode aired on 5/4 in the UK and you can download it via various torrent sites. Your car is used prominently on the opening of the show. Congrats!

Not the greatest copy of the video, but here it is on Youtube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mNLfEPmjU0

and the Wheeler Dealers' write up about the episode:

http://wheelerdealers.discoveryuk.com/car/volkswagen-181-thing/

The photography in the opening with Billy's car in the Cajon Pass turned out great! Cool
