How do I unclog the heat riser tube? Has anyone used Zarwerks to purchase a K manifold or the heat riser tubes they sell? This is for a 1960 bug 36hp Intake manifold VW# 111.129.701 E Thanks

Yep.

About 18 inches of stiff cable like an old clutch cable (slightly more than half the length of the hear riser). Cut it off with bolt cutters (it's very tough steel) at an angle so you have a point on one side. Put it in a battery drill and spin BACKWARDS so the cable does not unravel. Drive it in from both ends.

If you try to use a long cable and go right through from one end, the cable whips around too much.

Once you have a small hole through the gunk, you can turn it upside down and soak overnight in carb cleaner, drain and drill it out again - that will get a lot more gunk out and keep it working longer.

The main reason they clog up is that folks wait too long before rebuilding an engine - if you drive it for a long time with the car burning oil, it builds up crud in the heat riser and eventually blocks it.

The heat riser is an essential part of the single carb setup on a bug - it keeps the intake warm so the fuel stays suspended in the air-stream along that long induction manifold, and it also stops icing under the carb in colder weather.

Another likely contributor is the lack of a thermostat.

Another contributor might be those who enrich the A/F mixture to make up for missing and mismatched parts.

I used muriatic acid every night for 3 weeks with a drain auger. Just don't breathe the fumes, they will dissolve your lungs.

I had success with filling the tube with water, soaking overnight then laying it on the gas grill and cooking it full blast for fifteen minutes.
Makes the carbon build-up break up as the water boils.
Still need to use the cable and drill to finish honing it out.
Non-toxic also! Wink
