Yes, the wire connects to the square plug for the diagnostic system and was only on 1974. |

I certainly do not have the knowledge or skills of the famous Domeck brothers, but I am not sure it was a 74 item only? I had one on my 73 when I pulled the engine:
I have not reason to believe that the engine in my 73 was anything but original. I bought it from the original owner and no mention was made of changing the engine.
I left it off after I rebuilt the engine. I know it went to the diagnostic plug. It wasn't wired to anything when I pulled the engine out.

Very well could have been on some late 73 cars. Same as Beetle. The cars we have worked on that had this has been 74's. |

Is there a 74 (possibly 73)-specific flywheel that goes with this sensor? _________________ "The new Volkswagen 1303. We've made so many improvements, they're beginning to show." |

If I read the microfitche correct That sensor started with vin 183 3026 060 with a date of 9-30 1973. This must be why I have only seen these on 74 cars. This had me thinking all day. Now if we know VW they could have started in 73 and our info from them is wrong. |

Thinking anything with a diagnostic plug had them- lots of T-4 s had them saw 2 pins on a flywheel- close together. _________________ some days I get up and just sit and think. Some days I just sit.

My 73 Thing does not have the flywheel sensor. The case casting shows that VW obviously anticipated it coming along, but the hole wasn't machined out on my case. My case was cast in May of 73. The sensor works in conjunction with a flywheel that had two pins. I want to say that VW discontinued the diagnostic system in 1977 or 1978. I've got a bulletin somewhere in my stash that mentions it no longer being supported.
The flywheel sensor when used in conjunction with the #1 spark plug wire sensor allowed the dealer diagnostic computer of the time to calculate very accurate timing. I think I read somewhere that it was accurate to within a tenth of a degree. Better than you can do with a strobe light... _________________ "I like how everyone likes talking about Zeke's Thing yet he's the only one that's ever seen it." - Katie
