Yeah, I've done a little digging since my original post and have come to realize they may not be SCAT. I really don't know what they are, but I do know that they are extremely comfortable. Could they be OEM seats from an American Car? or would you say that they are some sort of aftermarket seat? I'm intrigued Very Happy

just finished up a 4" narrowed beam install. new king and link pins in the drop spindles, narrowed tie rod tubes (duh), new tie rod ends, and new brake shoes while I was at it. Haven't had a chance to drive it yet, just recently put some new shoes on it and fitting the satin black billet running boards. she's coming along nice. still need to fit the snowflakes I bought for it and have them painted to match. those 58+ tails really bug me for some reason =)

Don't worry about the purest or devalue of the car, most people will see your car and have flashbacks of when they HAD a VW and wish they still had one.
A few nicks and dings are par for a car a half century old.

You have one sweet ride. ENJOY!!

Thank you, I don't really worry about what other people think of my car because at the end of the day its my car, and it may not be for everyone. People have different styles and my car may not suit everyone. I did however buy some snowflakes because those taillights bug me =)

Only puzzling thing to me is filling in the semaphore slots...

Save up for some Egg Tailights, expensive but damn cool. There is a guy on here re-casting the egg lenses and they are perfect replicas. Just installed them on my Nov. 54

Enjoy the car, the seats are bad ass, whatever they are

I think if I read right with my car being a US May 1-0888 Vin it would have come from the factory with Snowflake tails, bullet turn signals no semaphores, am I right?

**All 1954-1955 European Beetles were outfited with "heart" taillights.

**All Oct'54 (chassis # 1-0722915) - Mar'55 U.S., Guam, and Canadian market cars used the red convex plastic lens taillights. All of these cars had semaphore directional indicators.

**April'55 - May 2, 1955 (chassis # 1-0871206) U.S., Guam, and Canadian market cars, there are two possibilities. Your car could have the red convex plastic lens taillights and semaphores, or it could have the optional flashing turn signal package with the larger glass taillights and "bullet" style front flashing directional indicators.

**May 3, 1955 (chassis # 1-0871207) - July'55 (chassis # 1-0929746) U.S., Guam, and Canadian market cars were equipped with the flashing indicator package as standard equipment. So, this car would have the larger glass taillights and "bullet" style front directional indicators.

Thanks janerick3,

I seem to be getting the "filled semaphore" question and comment a lot. Seems as if all of the changes that occurred in '55 have led to a lot of confusion.

With all of that cleared up, here's a pic of it with my new shoes on. Now I just need to get those OG snowflake tails mounted and painted ASAP =)

Thanks for that clarification, I knew there was the new model year starting in August 55, but didn't realize the earlier change.

I guess the good news is that snowflakes are much cheaper than egg's

The small taillights need to sit lower.
I don't have the dimensions, but they're too high atm

Take a look under the Oval-window beetle FAQ on top of the oval forum.
You will find the measurement for the taillights there.

And a lot more 😊

Nice Oval you've got there. But I'm a tad confused about this tail light info. Ive got an original (bought from OG owner) June 1955 Oval window. According to the birth certificate (from Stiftung AutoMuseum Volkswagen), my oval left the factory on 16 June 1955, was sent to Kelsey, London and then out to Australia in CKD form (completely Knocked down) and then assembled and sold in Australia. It has Heart Tail lights and semaphores. Question
I know its original as I bought it from the OG owner and seen pics of it in his albums when he was a young man. It had the hearts fitted from new according to him.

The US, Canada and Guam got the "Snowflake" lights, along with "bullet" turn signals as optional equipment in April 1955 and as standard equipment in May. The rest of the world retained the heart taillights through July and semaphores through 1960 (with some exceptions).

as stated above. my car is a US late May '55 so mine would have come with bullets and snowflakes. I ordered my birth certificate about 5 months ago and still waiting for it to come in. I've heard it takes quite a while sometimes.

Please forgive me because I know this subject has been beatin' to the ground but this is my first oval and what i'm learning is it being a '55 only complicates things. My VIN puts my car at a May '55 and i'm trying to figure out the correct height my tails should be at. As you can see from the pics above in this post it came with 58+ tails on it. I've read numerous threads and I try to do as much research as I can without bothering people on here with subjects I know have been covered before. The problem when I look at '55 stuff I see tails in all different heights. Hearts that are low, snowflakes that are high, and snowflakes that are low. Can anyone shed some light on if the snowflakes on a MAY '55 would be mounted low like the hearts or high like 56+? Any info would be appreciated. This is how they sit now after I lowered them down about an 1"

Danke!

Looks way better to me! I have seen a link on here with 55 tail light location dimensions. Not sure if it was for hearts eggs or snowflakes but I'll go hunting and post link here when I find it...
