Last month I bought a spare engine to fix up. The biggest problem I have is oil leaking from the valve cover. When I went to replace the gasket, I turned the engine over by hand and oil came streaming out of one of the valves. This didn't seem normal... Replaced the gasket and oil is still leaking. Any thoughts on why so much came out? I will investigate the leaky gasket later.

:idea Inside the engine case will only contain so much oil thus if over filled will come out the push tubes in to the valve cover and LEAK or dump when the cover is removed...assuming the engine is in/out of the car and NOT running.
If running oil would exit via other places due to possible internal compression issues......just too many variables w/o knowing more. |

You said it was to fix up.
If oil came out a valve now you know why... _________________ my59: Well son, my grandfather died before I got to drive it, so does that answer your question?

You got that right! Now any idea why? Will check the oil level this evening... _________________ Daniel

I think you mean out of one of the valve stems? If so, it would have to come out of the cylinder itself and past the valve heads.
Could it be that the engine was in storage and someone squirted oil in the cylinders to keep them lubed? There would have had to have been quite a lot in there.
Or, was the engine shipped or laid on one side or the other at a steep angle? What is the oil level in the sump?
Not at all typical, so it may take some tear down for diagnosis. _________________ -Bruce
