I am a buggy guy, I have three Original Meyers Manxes, but I am still a newby to rolling around in a full beetle. I really want to pick up a ragtop for something to fix up and be a daily driver.

I have been looking at this 65 pictured below. can I get your thoughts on it?

Owner doesnt know the history it, No rust, runs well. Has been repainted a few times. Looks like a fun one to fix up. But I have been reading the 65 ragtops really don't exist unless it came from Mexico.

Any indicators that this is either a good or bad purchase. (not worrying about price, but more of if the ragtop looks aftermarket, wrong fenders, or anything I should be looking for when I go to pick it up.)

The ragtop definitely looks aftermarket to me. It looks smaller than a vw ragtop. Someone installed 56-57 front signals.

Are you sure it's a '65?

Front turn signals look strange, what is the button to the right of the ashtray, and would a '65 have script on the decklid (mine doesn't)?.

I think what you are seeing on the right of the ash tray is a aftermarket cigarette plug.

The owner said it is a 65 but, I couldn't tell you how much of a vw guy he if he has the year wrong.

Cigarette lighter socket, it's just missing the lighter part. (Probably put away while being used with a cell phone charger).

Do the body and pan numbers match? Most of my knowledge is in 56-63 beetles. I would guess it's a 65. It has the larger windows and i believe 66 was the start of the center defrost vent.

Grafted -in ragtop looks pretty nice to me. Check there for a proper job of grafting in. That could be one of the older aftermarket sunroofs that aren't made anymore, Britax??

Looking at the pics, the front door pillars looks like to have some damage, or maybe something was done to them or the dash.
Otherwise if it's fairly rust free and the price is OK to you, go for it.

Idea In addition to the above the right side door closure pillar looks damaged and also the hood is NOT sitting correctly. Could be a hinge adjustment but don't think so as it would bring the front of the hood TOO far forward to the bumper....front end may have been hit.

Thanks for all the input guys. I think I am going to pass on this one.

I was pretty stoked on it for $3000. But it is a 6 hour drive to go pick it up, so if I made the trip I was going to pretty much come back with it regardless. Even if it didn't turn out that nice when I got there. But after some of the points you guys brought up I think I will hold off for a "real" rag in better condition.
