Just thought I would share my latest mod. A few years back I started with a pair of dellorto DRLA40 which were fun on the 1835. Then I started reading about megasquirt and decided to convert back to injection using the stock hardware, craving the smooth injection delivery and efficiency.
I got it running with injection and crank trigger ignition off coil packs - very nice combo but the size of the engine meant that the stock runners were all over at 3500 rpm for acceleration.
So I started reading about boost on shoptalkforums
A few months on axle stands and..
just got this up and running a few weeks back -full stainless custom headers and a GT15 garrett.
It is VERY quick and runs 12 psi of boost. The best part is being able to tune safe air fuel mixtures and accurate ignition retard timing under full load.
The biggest challenge for me was keeping it all under the stock deck lid - which is a success.. I don't think I could go much larger with turbo selection though as room is tight.
These are older photos while under construction
.
I have the oil being pulled over the engine and back into dipstick via scavenge pump now.

And your Dellortos found a good home too.
Although, - your turbo setup is pretty tempting. I could easily be lured down that road but I made a deal with myself that I must have my car registered and running for at least 18months before I go playing funny buggers with the engine again. With any luck my turbo fetish will subside and my bank balance won't suffer the damage.
Keep us updated! Well done and nice work routing all the pipes. _________________ Sydney, Australia.

Thanks - it goes very well. Love those delortos mate - I have a beam to work on too - let's talk.
I got pulled up by the five oh today - checked out my plates (we have club plates in Melbourne). They then spotted the wheels and wanted to know if it was a Porsche. Then the cold sweat question - does this have a turbo - it made a loud whistle on take off.. ahhh no, just very custom exhaust. . note dump pipe next to left ankle.
Will be making a video soon - just need to do some fine tuning first.

lol! can't even remember the last time I got pulled over. Never had any of my cars checked even though they are all modified.
Watch out for them, they are cracking down on club cars that are modified. rules changed either last or this month to need full engineering report and rwc for cars on club plates.
sux I know but too many dickheads exploiting the scheme have stuffed it once again for everyone else. _________________ The best of VW engine development!

Cars already on club plates do not need RWC.. as they have already been accepted.
I will be getting a mod plate for insurance reasons. |

so you got in before the change? I think its ok as they can't back track cars that were done before the date of change to the rules.
Not sure on the modification class though?
Didn't get very reassuring talk from the president of the club plate scheme, hes in our club He says they are cracking down on modded car without engineering cert. He tells that vicroads shutdown few clubs already.
Hes like a nazi!
Fare enough though. I'd hate for it to be all scraped or made excessively hard before I get my last 2 heavily modified cars on plates. Of course Id be getting engineering reports.
Anyway, where the dyno chats I've always wanted to know what a type 3 engine with turbo makes as hardly anyone has done it coz most just dump a suby engine in, but i already know that make stupid amounts of power.
I know Will was always talking of turbo his SB, but i dont know what happen to that kid, just disappeared? _________________ The best of VW engine development!

I'll do some more tuning before dyno. It's very quick and punchy, I've got a small turbo so designed for torque and with the narrow intake runners it creates great velocity.
You can still get a modified car on club plates, but it will be a M plate for modded rather than H for historic. Yeah I got in beginning of the year so safe.. I'll be putting a muffler on to hide from the five oh attention after day of vw.
Willo is still kicking about. We're building my next engine next year together. He's still planning on a type 3 turbo rally car. Come to day of and you'll see this car and his car there.

Are you using an oil drain pump or is there enough drop of altitude to not have issue back to the engine case?
I really like how you mounted the turbo itself! _________________ 64 No'back Speedster "Pearl"

Thats a nice setup! Would you have more room for a bigger turbo if it was on the other side? I've seen larger t3 turbos fit there. They also let the turbo gravity drain the oil back into the dipstick tube pipe with a bung welded onto it.
I'm curious to know what the air temps are when boosting at 12psi. I'm debating if I should install a water to air intercooler...prolly not as efficient as an air to air, but better than nothing right. _________________ 68 Fastback Build: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=5396323#5396323 |

Very nice!! My next motor will be turbo'd.
Did a buch of Californians move there and start screwing up the car laws?? What a PITA. . . _________________ Regards,

I will be installing a air to air rx7 inter cooler (last of my space) - currently 57deg or 134 Fahrenheit on boost.
I no longer have a drain setup. I opted for a scavenge pump that pulls oil from turbo and pushes into the dipstick fill.. I figured that would be better for the car and turbo.
As for turbo size. Right side is better I reckon. Saying that I'm totally satisfied with my setup as is. |

134 degrees F isn't that high at 12psi of boost, but that is relative to your ambient temp. I remember when my intake temps would reach close to 170 degrees F in 75 degree weather. With an intercooler, it brought it down to about 120ish.
As long as your setup works without any problems, its all good to go. It really looks nice and thought out. Hopefully my system will be ready in the next coming months. _________________ 68 Fastback Build: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=5396323#5396323 |

No the government did, anything they can to get money from the people.
You should know, everything is illegal in Oz except for government and authority people, perfectly ok for them. _________________ The best of VW engine development!

I don't think i'd bother, thats very low temps.
Most N/A engine run hotter than those intake temps.
I was tuning a 5.7L Monaro yesterday with stock banana manifold and its temps were around 95-105ºC
It needs a CAI I think but even then it will only drop it down to 75-80 which is still heaps hotter than your boosted temps.
You can if you want, install an IC but I don't think you'll gain much if those indeed are accurate MAT readings?
For best engine response, no IC is the way to go provided temps are good. _________________ The best of VW engine development!
