Hi Everybody....
I have been shopping for a couple of months for a VW project...love the looks of the volksrods but the low rider style isnt really me, then there is the Baja VW look but some of that stuff can get pretty crazy too...what I remember as a kid was called "mini-stocks" and they ran all the local oval tracks back in the mid 1960's and into the late 1970s' when around here they sorta faded away...

I am thinking about building something like one of those earlier versions of an oval track VW, they were all full bodied then...they added push bars on the front and rear, nerf bars on both sides, a full cage inside, full racing bucket seats....hacked up fenders on all four corners, maybe some offset steel wheels too...maybe even if I am brave some faded numbers on both the doors...

Has anybody built anything like that and run it around on the streets in their neighborhood? I can see it in my head...just never saw on the highways in my neck of the woods...

Any insight would be awesome...

Here is a link to a previous thread but they are real race cars. Cool pics though.

I have never seen a street one done up like this but we must have grown up at the same time in the north east. During the seventies my brother & I would go to dirt tracks at least once a week in NJ, Pa, NY area. In my mind those were the best years. I do vividly remember mini-stocks but not any VWs.

Go for it. I would check to see if it would be a legal thing to do before you get all done & find out it might not be good for the street. Neat looking project. I worked with a guy who was putting a 'legend mini stock' on the street. Looked cool, single seat, bike motor for power.

Oh my gosh MMW

Thats just about what I am looking for...nothing crazy just something that looks cool but looks a little different than the stock VW....it would probably end looking like a mix between a Baja and a Volksrod...only with numbers on the doors....

I am thinking it would be fun and fairly safe to drive too...decent cage inside...really good bucket seats too...racing seat belts...
Smile

thanks for the link...

Be careful having a cage on the street. A lot of times in an accident they do more harm than good. Why? Because you have no head protection (helmet) & when your head slams into the cage during an accident it is usually catastrophic. Especially in a bug where your head will be very close to the side bar. Maybe just a roll bar?
