Here's a thought - if you haven't already disposed of the "former resident",
... then perhaps you could fashion it into something like this to mount on the dashboard:
How cool would that be?

I missed a trick there didn't i He and his mates went in the bin a while back…
The interior on a '55 build car is slightly different to a '56 on car, the seats and door panels are all vinyl as opposed to vinyl/cord on the later cars.
Luckily this interior is in pretty good shape, just needs a good clean. The original headliner is also there, a bit holed, but its there.
The carpet on the inside of the heater channels is missing, but the 1/2carpet-1/2 rubber on the bulkhead is intact,as are the floor mats,in several pieces. They match the rest of the car
The carpet behind the rear seat is missing, taken by the rats i presume
I took the door panels off to give them a clean, and to check for a body number on the doors. Couldn't find a body number anywhere, maybe i need new glasses!
Note the vapour barrier too, not the normal clear plastic type, but a blue vinyl. I have seen this on another early car as well.

Yes, has the early style drains.
The nose brace is missing/removed. I guess when it had a knock on the front it was removed for ease of repair. |

Hello Russ, it's great fun seeing more of this early car. Thanks for sharing more photos and details!
The 'Turista' windscren sticker was indeed a temporary tourist motoring permit for driving in Mexico, so your Lizard Green car must have been on a very long drive, at one point in its life. These were evidentally mandatory in the 1960's, if not also later. As a young lad, there lived a woman who lived in the house next to us, and she was the original owner of a white 1965 Beetle. There was such a sticker left on her car, after a road trip 'south of the border' just after her car was new. She had left it on this (very well kept) VW through the 1990's as a proud memento of an epic international road trip in her beloved car. _________________ David Ruby

Nice ride! I'm surprised at the condition given it spent at least some of its life in WI!

My 1957 is also missing the nose brace and I'm guessing the nose was repaired at some point as well.
There was a discussion a while back on the forum regarding repro of the brace. Are you planning on replacing or going without? Just curious as it seems to be a rare part. |

did you look under the vapor barrier for the body number? here is where it is on my november 1955 coupe Karosserie#595. (the number was double stamped on my car, which is unusual)
does this car have a passenger door handle without a key lock?

Cheers Dave, confirms what i thought. Must have been an epic trip, there'll be a dusty photo album somewhere of this trip, shame we'll never see it |

Thanks. I'll be running it as is for now. When it gets restored it can be attended to then. Would be a good piece for someone to reproduce as quite a few cars seem to be missing them.. |

Yes i'm pretty sure i looked under there, trying not to disturb the vapour barrier too much. I can see the door panels coming off again!
The passenger handle has a key,i'm pretty sure it was stamped with the key code as well so i would think original, my car is pretty late in '55. |

Does that handle have the metal broken away exposing a wooden core?
When I first saw it, I thought that it must be one of those ultra rare wood trimmed door handles that came with the optional interior wood trim package.
I think it actually looks pretty cool like that. |

The blue vinyl on the inside of the door is not original to your Ghia. You can see remnents of the original orange wax paper on the inside of the door and the blue vinyl is not the hair cell type used on VWs at the time. You might consider removing the blue vinyl so the door panels can fit properly and there is a vendor in the Ghia classifieds that sells a nice match to the orange wax paper. There should be a small piece of vinyl on the arm rest/pull strap bracket (on the back of the door panel) that clips onto the door. |

I believe the blue vinyl is original to the car, as i said i have seen it on another '55 build car. Took a while to find the photos, but here they are..
Orange wax paper on the door panels, blue vinyl vapour barrier.
One car spent its life in CA. the other in WI. , what are the chances of the vapour barrier being replaced on both, with the same material
I guess they changed to the standard clear plastic later on , things were changed all the time early on in production. |

Fooled me to. I think it's just a reflection on that shiny chrome. _________________ .ssS! |
