My 1964 Volkswagen Beetle as it was found after sitting broke down in a garage for 37 years. There is some rust (it's from Indiana) but the heater channels are pretty solid and not a bit of rust in the floor pan. The car was covered with a sheet of plastic when the roof of the garage started leaking on it. Look at all of that mold on the door panels from the moisture not being able to escape! These photos are from the first day I got her!

Next morning I decided to clean her up. The paint shined up pretty well with a little rubbing compound and elbow grease. The door panels look much better after scrubbing the mold. The seats look much better after removing the seat covers and finding the original seats under them.

| Plans for the beetle are not to have a show car but a semi ratty daily driver. I bought a stainless roof rack, all new brake parts, cb performance 2" narrowed beam. I plan to drop the rear one notch. I got rid of the 14" Ford wheels and adapters to use stock smoothies with 145/65/15s on the front. Now the work begins! |

| Those are what was on it when I got it. They were 14" ford wheels, with pretty cool looking Allstate whitewalls but they had to go plus they had been on the car since 1971 (yes, the receipt for the tires was in the glove box). Stock smoothies are going on her! |

Nice, wish mine was that clean!
Here is my 64 I built back in like 91 when I got out of high school.
before (just a shell)
After (so not what I would do with a car these days but at 19 years old, your ideas are different from what they are when you get older, although I would still graft a ragtop into a hardtop today)

Had the day off and wanted to lift the body from the pan. Nobody is around to help so I decided to drop the pan instead of lifting the body Much easier on my back). The floorpan slid out pretty easy! Now I can see how bad the cancer is and get started on this project.

Got my new front beam today along with a bunch of other parts from cb performance. It would have been nice had they at least put tape over the holes in the beam so it wasn't filled with packing peanuts.

I do plan on going with anthracite but It will be a while before she gets painted. I am guessing she will be red with gray primer for the first year.
Got the front beam un-assembled and now time for cleaning and painting, then the new beam goes on.

Ok, I have a question... The short (driver side) tie rod end is bent on one end. Is this how it is supposed to look? My old one was straight on both ends! It looks like it should work fine if I use that end on the steering box drop arm.
I am getting her together slowly, it will take a while to get the alignment figured out plus I have no idea what angle the steering box will be until I put the body back on.

According to both of my manuals, you are correct.
My guess is that some point, the P.O. used a right-side/outer tie-rod end there instead of the proper left-side/inner tie-rod end.
