My new 1964 Beetle project

Looking good and keep your thread updated w/photos. I am doing the same with my '64 project but no body off restoration (solid So Cal car). Looking at the new beam I assume you are still going for a ratty daily driver Bug.

Did not get much done the past couple days. The garage has no heat or insulation and I spend most of my time cleaning it up. I did get the front brake backing plates wire wheeled and painted with rattle can. I installed new wheel cylinders, shoes, and hardware along with a master cylinder. Next time I go out to the garage, I hope to get the rest of the front end back together so I can start on the rear (dropping one spline).

Yesterday I picked up a good running 1600 engine, 12 volt starter, and a couple boxes of parts from Wolfsburg West also arrived! Very Happy

Indiana weather makes me not want to go out to my unheated garage but I did lower my rear spring plates one outer notch and install new bushings. I also painted my wheels, ordered new 145/65/R15 tires for the front and got a bunch of needed parts.

It has been a while since I have been out into the cold garage but spring is on its way so I better get to work. Yesterday I pulled the transaxle out of the floorpan. I can't believe the rigged up stuff that I find on a car that was only in use for 14 years. Here is a picture of transmission carrier and the bolt that was cross threaded. Instead of fixing the problem, the "mechanic" used household electrical wire twisted arount the bolt several times to filled in the more than 1/4" gap from where the bolt wouldn't go in......Well, trans is out and ready for some cleaning and grinding to fit that 12v flywheel in.

I bought some 145/65/15 smart car tires for the front. These alone will bring the car down 1 1/2" from the stock 165sr15 tires that were on it.

I got a little work done to the beetle now that it warmed up some. I cleaned and painted the floorpan, tapped the frame horn that was stripped and rigged up with wire and replace the trans carrier. Had plans to have the transaxle installed today but bought the wrong front mount so had to order another one from Wolfsburg West. Looks like I need to replace the shifter bushing also.

Just replaced my shift rod bushing. I was worried that it was going to be a tough task after reading about it but it was a pretty simple job. Less than 15 mins including cleaning the shifter rod. Glad I had the body off to do it. on to the next project....... Grinding out the transaxle for 12 volt flywheel!

808veedub, Yes, the wheels were just painted with rattle can, Rustoleum canvas white and gloss colonial red.

Got a little work done today. Installed the transaxle, with new mounts from Wolfsburg West. I also ground out the bellhousing to fit the the larger 12 volt flywheel. I installed the starter bushing for the 12 volt starter and got new axle seal kit installed on one side. Hopefully I can get a little more done in the morning while everyone is still sleeping.

Spent the whole day working on the beetle and it was pretty much all for nothing. I installed new trans input seal, heavy duty cb performance throw out bearing cross shaft that now needs to come out again as it is so tight that it doesn't turn. I also installed my rear brakes only to find that the shoes are to wide. So now I need to figure out if I got the front and rear mixed up or I was sent the wrong shoes for the rear. Anyone know if the front shoes are wider than the back on a 64 beetle? Well, at least I got my trans input shaft installed.

My last update on the old 64, I had the front and rear brake shoes swapped. I have gotten that fixed, got the throw out shaft for the clutch working correctly and now have installed the engine. I was surprised at how fast this thing fired up.

It has been a while since I posted any progress on the Beetle but most everything was just the normal small stuff like cleaning this or that. Yesterday I got some time so I went out and cut the hole for my ragtop graft. I still have some trimming to do before I weld it in but I think it should work out just fine. I still have not decided if I am going with a Haartz Stayfast canvas top or vinyl like my last ragtop. Either way, I am going to be happy to have an open roof again.

Anybody know what company makes this ragtop? After looking at several Haartz canvas tops at fun fest, this one looks like the best quality. I think it is sewfine but I want to be sure. I like that there is no stitching about an inch in like most others. Anyone know?
