I purchased a Judson this year at a swap meet. Unit is fairly complete and should be fine after a re-build. I have already talked with George about it and he has convinced me to do it myself. Honed the housing last week and it looks great. Next move will be to get a parts order submitted to George. Hope to have it done and ready to install on my '62 Ghia this winter. Ghia has a fresh 1200 with a big-bore kit and runs quite well. Dave J

Just my 2 cents worth, but you may be disappointed with the Judson on that big bore kit, It wasn't designed to fill more than the original 1200.

That's true but the Judson's worst enemy is inflated expectation. Many try to overdrive the unit by fitting a smaller diameter blower pulley to spin it faster and quickly run into overheating problems.

If you're happy to accept any gains the stock unit will give then just bolt it on and drive...it will flow more mixture than a normally carburated big-bore but not as much as most usually expect.

If you're into problem solving (re: overheating) then give it a go...some have made some innovative modifications to cool the unit but I don't know how successful they have been.

Parts order has been submitted to George. Housing has been cleaned and painted. Will have to come up with an air filter to use. Would like to do it without modifying the engine lid, but I do have a spare engine lid just in case. I don't have any crazy expectations about performance, really want to do this just to be different I guess! I do see people running them on motors larger than 1200, so I think it is a feasible option for my 1385. Besides, let's face it, any amount of power increase is just that, an increase! Dave J

Those Ampco Oilers are amazing...all '50/'60s NOS. George Folchi bought up the entire remaining stock and sells them at a very reasonable price; a fraction of the price people are asking for a Marvel Oiler.

George is an amazing resource. I was pleasantly surprised by the price of the Ampco, he also sent along a pulley key and a Judson ID badge which I had not thought about! Thanks George, nice to know there are still honest men of their word out there. Just got done painting the intake manifold, pictures later. Dave J

Would anyone(John!) know what size to drill a jet out to for this Judson application. It calls for a 140, I have a 122.5 from a spare carburetor and could drill it out if I had an idea of what size to make it. Don't mind buying a new one of the correct size if I need to, but why not try to drill one out! Dave J

Actually the 40hp Judson calls for a 135 main jet (George can supply) and the 140 is for an air correction jet for the 36hp version.

You are correct! For some reason I had remembered a 140 instead. May still try to drill it slightly larger as an experiment. Dave

Rebuild is complete! Went together nicely with no issues. Can't wait to get it on and running this winter.

Have spent some time trial-fitting the Judson. Came to the realization that while I might make it work with a spacer under it to clear the alternator, it made more sense to put a generator back on. Traded my alternator for a good generator and regulator. Clearance issue resolved!

Also had to modify the carb linkage arm to work on my PICT 30, slot for throttle shaft had to be welded up and moved 90 degrees.

For the final fitment you may want to use some gasket-cinch or pertronix aviation on the hardware to your judson. It will probably leak if you don't.Also , on the bottom of the judson there is a plug with a slot for a screwdriver. If you take the plug out you can fit a brass fitting for a boost gauge. Pain in the ass to run the vacuum line, and the line will probably cost more than the gauge but it's fun to have.
Keep the updates coming, I don't know about others but I love reading this stuff.
What about the generator outer pulley piece ?Do you have the judson one . if not you might have to shave yours down if it makes contact with the belt. I also had to make do with one bolt to the coil bracket instead of two since I had to turn the coil vertical to clear the throttle linkage. I just used some locktite and cinched it real tight and it worked.

End caps have been sealed with gasket sealer. Will no doubt use some on all gasket surfaces for final assembly. Need to get some copper washers for carb mount nuts as well as nyloc nuts for same area to get a good seal. I also only have one coil mounting bolt, I see in original installation instructions that this was the official method. Good question about belt clearance on the generator pulley, I shall watch for that as I get to the belt install. Need to come up with an air cleaner for this, hate to spend the money for an official one, will look at some other options first. I do have a "hood scoop" and spare engine lid to use as I fine tune. Waiting on my carb jet from George Folchi to arrive, then just have to have a slight pulley modification done at the machine shop for the crank drive. Thanks for your interest and information.

Has been a busy few weeks. After several trips to the machine shop, I finally have the drive pulley situation squared away. Went to the local parts emporium and got belts for it and after a short time had everything installed.

Yes, I started it up today and it sounds great! Still have some fine tuning to do and the air filter and hood scoop situation to deal with. Ended up going with the real thing for a scoop and I think a later model Ghia elbow and after market filter will work for me.

Thanks Rich for your willingness to supply me with one! It will soon be painted black to match the car.
