Well I ended up just mounting the cover I had over the round hole, I had to use a couple extra screws, I will paint the screw heads black and hopefully it won't be too noticeable.
Not my favorite thing to do, as I want this cars base to be very original, but I think this is an exception as making more cuts may cause unnecessary rust later on. As far as the left access hole or I should say the non-existent hole, I've decided to leave it alone and uncut...
What do you guys think?
Now I need to get the dummy brake fluid reservoir mounted by making a strap and screwing that in and my front end resurrection should be complete.... |

We also got the deck lid put back together.
It really is looking different, as when we got the car all of the rubber had been painted white when the car was resprayed at some point a bright white.
As well as some of the dash, It's starting to look like a VW again, Plus I feel things are getting accomplished as the parts sitting around the garage are dwindling down.

I got a chuckle out of the "parts dwindling down " comment....I finally have a usable patio after a year of Type6 project......
GREAT feeling of accomplishment.......
Now you can start thinking of the next project
57 oval !!!
note : be careful assembling the dash vent ; the lower piece is NOT reproduced ; I put vasaline on the plastic so it would snap together easier..
.The top piece is available from WW
Did you put hose clamps on the fuel filter and hose out of the tunnel ?...{ earlier photo } _________________ 63 two fold rag

Grandpa Pete- the first thing we did when we got the car was get rid of the plastic (half melted) fuel filter in the engine bay, found a nice metal one and replaced all of the fuel line with new stuff. I had some spring tension clamps that fit just right and put those on even though it may not be needed, I prefer a little something extra.... |

Last weekend we worked on cleaning up the front end, access cover, dummy brake res.( just need to fabricate a strap), hood release tube.
Instead of welding the hood release tube, which got pretty mangled in the accident, we straightened it as best we could and attached it to the body with some clips.
Finished out GT Mat installation as well, works much better when heated with a hair dryer for a few minutes

Great Progress, but ive got a few suggestions.
1. Did you get rid of that urethane steering coupler and go back to a stock one? I made that mistake on my dune buggy and when it gives way, you have absolutely no steering, as compared to the original clothand rubber type, which still allow you to get the car outta the road ( safety)
2. That bowdens tube needs a curve in it
other than that, great job
(stole the pics from your gallery)
Great job otherwise

Bret
Yes I did buy the urethane one to replace the original. I didn't even think of that but you would be right when it breaks. I'll keep this one for now and definitely replace with og in the future. I really appreciate those kind of comments.
And as far as the Bowden tube goes are you talking about the clutch or throttle?
I did buy the throttle cable tube that goes between the chassis and engine tin..
The clutch tube does have a slight bow to it( it's flexible) the picture may be deceiving. |

The bowden tube is the flexible tube that the clutch cable is in. You should have a pronounced bend in it.( like this )
you can add spacers to the end of the tube that fits in the transmission bracket so that the tube will have the proper bend. without th bend your clutch function could be kinda catywampus

Bret's right. The washers at the end of the Bowden tube will give you a good "bend" in your tube. Here's what mine looks like I recently replaced:
You can also do a forum search and find TONS of threads on this. _________________ .

Did a little more work.
Getting the hood aligned / mocked up to be sure the release mechanism works. What a PITA. I had to crawl into the trunk area to remove the latch mechanism a couple of times because it wouldn't release.

I also scored a set of door handles and ignition with matching key to replace the beat up old ones.
The ones I got are not exactly the same, as they are not "wrapped"
From what I gather the stainless wrapped came later in 66...is it still correct if I use the solid ones I picked up?
One that came with the car is at the top of picture.
Cleaning lock mechanisms and replacing the weak springs, they felt much softer than the ones I had, didn't like it so I swapped springs.

polished up the ashtray and dash pieces....very tedious...drill with polishing wheel works great though.

What color are these knobs? ivory or grey ?

Based on your pics, it looks grey to me. The ivory is more yellow.
Here's a pic from shortride's gallery. Ivory window squirter button and the rest are grey.

With the holidays we haven't had much free time on our hands. As much as I'm enjoying working on the body reassembly we have to get he chassis ready to accept the body at some point soon. So we jumped back to it.
We managed to get the front suspension and steering finished and reassembled. rebuilt the steering box. We had to get a tie rod from the salvage yard since I found out the hard way our inner tie rod end was crimped on and since we already had all of the new ends I didn't want to have send them all back to buy a complete assembly.
Front Complete
Hell of a time with the anti-sway bar, I hope its correct.

And we got the transmission and axles out in one piece, It was definitely a lot easier than I had imagined it to be.
Now we get to start cleaning this all up and reassembling, I have a new rear seal kit and brakes just waiting to be installed.
trying to decide if I should replace the e-brake cables....?
We will be busy this weekend

Nice progress! Did you use a kit from somewhere to rebuild your steering box? I have yet to find one anywhere.... _________________ .
