Don't do it ...fake is not cool your barn door is cool just the way it is AND when people ask is that a real sun roof barn door you will (should) say not real and that will get old... Put a full length rack on it and leave it... _________________ (20-024785)Ambulance (20-037784)truck (20-035850)panel

Barndoor busses grow in the forest there

In that case, what is more real ?
- A fairly solid bus like that, which will keep most of its OG metal but have an added sunroof ?
- Or a factory sunroof BD but completely fucked up and rebuilt with mostly funky green panels, like Ken king's 52 i.e ? (Ken don't feel injured, I love your bus mate )
Should you be more proud of the 2d one ?
Even if it's very cool, I'd say the second bus should be more considered as a fake than the first one, and despite this, most of you just love it...
Anyway, I don't say it's good or not, nor he should do it or not... that's just a thought..
I have the same dilemma with my 52. Sometimes I want to install a sunroof in it and think that as long as it is well done, as a factory bus would be, then I should just don't care about what people will think. I don't plan to sell it anyway, so why not make it as I want it to be ?
But then the reason come back and I change my mind again ...

i can't help you with suggestions as to where to cut, but i'll say.... do it!
or pass the roof on to d-train, his pgsg really needs a sunroof.
as long as it is done to the standard a BD deserves, what is the problem? it's your bus and it is not like you are making a chopped roof, sectioned, mid engined, V8, shorty.
if you ever sell it then one of the nay-sayers can buy it and weld a solid roof back in... it's a lot less work than replacing the entire chassis. I bet even the haters would own and drive it with the sunroof. |

I say don't do it.
The fact it wont be original anymore and in my eyes worth less but never mind the monetary value but think of the fact you are one of the very few who gets a shot a these rare Volkswagens, its fate that you have ended up with this bus-maybe it chose you!remember though you are only its custodian, all it needs is help and you should respect it and do all it needs to stand tall and shine again.
If my bus had a sunroof grafted into it i'd be busy hatching a plan to weld it back up again, except along with other previous owner"improvements"I'm going to have to replace 4"of the roof all of the way round because someone thought it needed holes the roof for god knows what which allowed water in.....bla,bla-you should feel very lucky!
I hope you don't think I'm being a dick because I don't mean to be,just thinking of the bus,get a build thread up I'd love to see it on the road _________________ 1962 Turkis Westfalia so34.

all opinions are somewhat right. lets see the technical part of it. the roof of a barndoor is the biggest and most difficult part to build on a BD, so far there is no repro for that, with reason ! Ask people who have a dented roof or raingutter rust or have to cope with a cut roof. Think about what it takes to get this back to stock if you or somebody else would want that. try welding the spherical shape without distortion and using 10 mm of filler because it caved in from the heat. I say the roof is, along with the front panel, the most precious part of a BD and if yours is as good as it looks in the pic it should NEVER be cut for anything ! I wouldn't mind with a caved in or rusted through roof, that needed replacement or welding anyways.( I was planning to add a sliding sunroof to my first 54 panel, that had major rust through in the rear roof skin, too )
Think of all the 1000 working hours that are spendt in the BD community to fix that ******* roof, and then go out and DON'T cut yours! _________________ Hotrods, Fords, Veedubs and Triumph Twins !

Calle, you have other barndoors that are rusty and you could do this with, for example 20-034810, which is an 11W that actually needs a roof. From memory the OG headliner in your '55 is quite unique too, it would be a real shame to rip that all out. _________________ To catch a fish, you must first think like a fish.... |

True
There are about 50 known barndoors in Sweden. Just five owners paid more than 10000£ for their buses.
I think that´s why a lot of the swedes don´t know how rare a barndoor actually is. (my self included)
But I know how rare a nice roof is, so I wouldn´t cut this one. |

I say do it! That's just my opinion. I don't think I'll ever own a OG sunroof BD for under $100k . They're a few and far in between _________________ [Fiddy Whip] |

If the roof was really rough, then I'd say go for it. As it is, I'd say leave it, especially if you have a nice og headliner! _________________

I feel the need to chime in, since I was faced with this decision and really wanted a sunroof Barndoor. 1999 I bought my Barndoor which had a chimney hole in the roof, fukn hippies, right!
Within three days of buying the Bus, we were cutting it open, layed in an original sunroof (Kombi) clip, so its a REAL sunroof, for all those that think its fake. I can touch it today if I want, so REAL VW Metal. Can all those green panels added to Buses say that?
Never a regret, and have loved camping in it, sunroof open all night.
As for value, not worth a dime less, I would say much more. I have had a lot of offers, and currently 5 people on a list with very nice offers, or want a phone call if I ever want to sell.
Just do it, enjoy it, you can always sell it, and many that will buy it.
Here are some photos that show the clean white paint on the inside, where the clip metal was added.
And when the Bus was lowered, which will happen again next year
