Although I have never glassed beaded an VW engine case, I used to do a lot of Porsche 911 motors at a former employers shop. We never blasted cases but we used to do cam towers and chain boxes all the time. Its a lot of work to do it correctly and safely. Parts have to be super clean and most importantly dry before you blast. Also its best to only blast the superficial areas if possible and cap off any passages before blasting. As far as glass beads being released or embedded in the surface, I never found this to be an issue.
Another option that is generally considered safer is to have the case media tumbled. The case goes into a large vibrating receptacle that is full of tiny ceramic cones or irregular shaped pieces and water. The finish is a little different than a blasted case but still nice. Just another way to skin a cat. _________________ Independent German Auto
