Yeah keep the green one for sure! Lots of cool stuff, looks in decent shape too! Ignore the vultures wanting parts off it that are probably flooding your private message box.

How did you know? As I spend more time looking at her, I'm coming to appreciate Cinderella more and more. I haven't developed the discerning eye you old hands have. I appreciate your informed opinions on what to do with her.

cinderealla is more like an ugly duckling, waiting to be a beautiful swan...

it looks solid from the pics, a heavy foot and a big hammer will massage those bent panels back straight..

just like this..

Cinderella? Suitable, sure. But since Byron will be the prince to revive her, and she's jungle green, how about renaming her to "frog prince"? Remember that she crouched in the grass for ages as well.

Quote:
a heavy foot

That technique will certainly also work for the large, shallow dent on the driver's door- Just wear sneakers or work boots, position your right foot on the door, and press. You;ll have to first remove the window winder mechanism so you can reach your toe up as high as possible. Keep increasing the pressure until you hear the metal pop and feel your foot move outwards. Reposition your foot to another dented area on the door and repeat. The hood will take some more work because the dents go into the creased sections which are inherently stiffer than the flat door skin. Saving original metal with such crude techniques is fulfilling and instantly gratifying!

As to Frog's dash gauges, if they were fitted in Germany (likely), remember that dealer and general shop technicians there were taught to do things correctly as part of their trade training/apprenticeship. So the gauge positions were measured carefully, the holes cut, deburred, edges touched up, etc. Though looking at all those blue wires on the gauges go against a systematic hook-up...

I took the carb off the barn find 57 to look for nasty congealed gas and crap on the inside but it was clean as a whistle!

And what about this brass fitting soldered just under where the carb attaches? Is that stock? What's that for?

I'll order a carb rebuild kit to get new gaskets and put it back on. And I'll go ahead and do new plugs, points, condenser, etc before trying to fire it up. 35 year old plugs don't fill me with optimism.

Wanted to take the dizzy out to give it a good cleaning but it wouldn't lift out. Turns freely but wouldn't lift up. Does it have to be in a certain position to come out? I did this once on the Ghia but I don't remember it being an issue.

Got the choke cable freed up; it moves nice and easy now as well as the accelerator cable. It seems like this car wants to get back on the road!

Guess I need to take a look at the fuel lines next. I know the tank is cruddy inside. can see and smell bad things. I'll do a search before I ask you all about how to take out the tank and dealing with the fuel cut-off valve, etc.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Byron

Not sure if the picture of the distributor was before or after you tried, but in the picture the nut is still there that fastens the dizzy/clamp to the engine case

that was before. It just needed a little persuasion.

Vacuum gauge is the only thing that makes sense. Engines might have been swapped at some point??

You can stop those PMs with a " not parting out" post

Very Happy

I'm a big fan of using a vacuum gauge , so I think the PO was right on the ball.
I have vacuum gauges on most of our gas powered engines.
cheers on a great bunch of scores

Cleaning up the distributor on the barn find 57; should the arm (arrow) on the vacuum advance unit move in and out slightly? mine does not move at all. If mine is not right, can I refurbish it? I've searched but haven't found too much info on this item. Thanks!

Byron,

You can hook up a vacuum pump to the threaded port, the arm should move with vacuum pressure. Most times though, if it doesn't move the diaphragm is cracked or to dried out. You can swap the vacuum canister from another distributor though. It will still run with a bad vacuum canister, but won't advance like it should.

Been trying to sort through the parts stash. It's a pretty big job, not that I'm complaining. Found an old can that was rusted shut; finally got it open and found this.

SCORE! Just like Christmas here last night when I got it opened and saw that.

Here is an update: got the tank out and am soaking it with water and vinegar. You would not believe what came out of that thing. Just disgusting.

Got the master cylinder out--planning to replace everything associated with brakes. Waiting on my carb rebuild kit and points and condenser. Tore the distributor apart and gave it a good cleaning. The engine cleaned up pretty good too. And am cleaning years of gunk from underneath the car. Engine cleaner and my power washer do a pretty good job.

I'll keep you all updated if and when anything interesting happens.

Byron

thanks for your comments. Henry, I will get red and black pics tomorrow and try to get those posted tomorrow night. Almost too ashamed to show how bad they are. Red has almost no floor and black has no engine and not much interior left. These two were the ones left in the woods since forever. But I will let everyone see what's there.

And Steveo you are right about red. I probably will get a few parts off her to sell. See you all tomorrow night.

And here are some of the black '57 with no motor. Again, no cleaning done at all. Been spending all my time on the barn find, of course.

Byron...you have SO much $$$ in parts there! The interior of the black car needs to find it's way into my 56' rag! Laughing The Lemmerz beauty rings are some serious coin..but you have got to put them on your black barn find car or the green one with all of it's accessories it already has.
Don't think the red car is too far gone, you should see the work our friends across the pond are doing with rusted cars like yours. It's awe-inspiring!!!

I've been day dreaming about what those rings, extra visors, etc. might look like on the barn find. And the horn button from the black 57 is mint. It will definitely go on the barn find. I guess I should get covers for all of them, huh?
