At the request of others, and as to not clog up the 1500 Club thread, I'm starting this thread to preserve details about the car, document cleaning, servicing, additions, changes, etc
So, first off, an introduction. My name is Erik, and I'm an addict. I've been into VW's for a long time, I've had too many to count, and I prefer type 3's
I had been looking (as almost everyone knows) for a nice sunroof squareback. I've owned sunroof cars, I've owned squarebacks, but never a sunroof squareback. I couldnt find a nice one at a reasonable price. Then this car came along...
It was here on thesaba in the classifieds for a while, then it popped up on eBay. I bid but the reserve wasn't met. It was relisted, I negotiated with the owner, and it was on the way shortly after
It seams that Mr John Maderik of NY visited Germany in '63, bought the car in July, and had it shipped home to New York in August. Seems he went to Austria, Czechoslovakia, etc, as there are oil changes done, etc. I'm still trying to find family members and other previous owners _________________ Stop dead photo links! So for now, I've just been enjoying it and working on a few things here and there.
Drive the car to work on a friday, nice and cool out, so used the heater. Typical, so hot I have to roll a window down
On the way home, stopped by a train, so I turned the car off. Left the lights on. 5-10 minutes later, starter spins but wont start. Remembered the lights, turn em off, engine starts and blows a spark plug out of the head
limp it home (loudly) on 3 to asses the damage.
no shavings at all. So got some new NGK B5HS plugs the next morning, some antisieze and gapping, it went in and stayed in. Took it out that night and got it up to top speed. I'll have to watch out for that plug
Sunday I got at the gauges, None of the lights were working (I think just ground) clock wasn't hooked up, etc so I took everything apart and cleaned terminals and such (actually everything on this car is in good shape so not sure it helped)
anyways, got almost all of it working. No red light, and the gas gauge reads really low (it's full) but at least everything lights up now and the clock didn't lose a minute over 23 hours

Tons of documentation came with the car
Letter stating pretty much -Thanks for buying a VW, on your travels if you have any problems visit any of our dealers, etc etc
Insurance stuff
Passport for the car??

Ummm... awesome and jealous would be understatements of the obvious!
Congratulations and I would even keep it 99% stock (1 click front and rear).

Interesting....the original owner didn't just live in New York State but in NYC. I can't imagine how many Notchbacks were ever here. What state did you buy it from?
In any case, the top document is customs/shipping related. The one beneath is from a service station. I can't decipher the handwriting but the printed text refers to washing/cleaning the interior and engine/engine bay, changing engine oil, gear oil, service intervals, etc. |

Thanks. I have never had a driver VW I didn't slam, except my 59 DC, which I knew I would sell as soon as I got it. I think I found my keeper. I am tempted to slightly lower it. I sold my South African sprint stars as I was tempted to drop it on them. That shit would have been scene point central... _________________ Stop dead photo links! To figure out some of the stuff in those documents, maybe trying transcribing the words into Google Translate?

The upper document is the bill from the German customs authority in the city of Simbach, Inn. Issued on the 4th of July 1963 for the number plate - the custom-specific oval-shaped one, that only vehicles for export received in Germany at that time. The cost for granting of the plate was 2 DM (Deutschmarks) + a deposit of 10 DM was charged to make sure it will be returned.
The next one is a service bill, from a VW service station in Vienna, Austria - dated July 16th 1963
handwriting says:
Standlichtlampe li ersetzen o.b.
(parking light bulb left exchanged - no charge)
Deckelschloss hinten aus- und einbauen und fetten
(rear deck lid lock cylinder removed, greased and re-assembled - guarantee service)
the lower line is not exactly clear to me it says something regarding ...7885 and the cost of 11,40 öS = Österreichische Schilling (austrian schilling, their currency in 1963)
the last piece says indeed parcel tray for VW 1500 _________________ 1966 Fastback "The Volksback"

Wonderful score, Erik.
Yeti69 accurately translated the 3 documents. I offer 3 clarifications:
1. The top document, as Yeti mentions, is a receipt for the payment and receiving the oval-shaped "customs" lic. plates. Many people here in the USA confuse those as "German" plates, whereby they were internationally issued. they'd have the same shape if you'd obtain them in other countries. In addition to the registration numbers, such plates also had a round plaque stamped into the plates, just like the standard lic. plates from German. The round plaque was located in the upper right of the oval, and would have the stamp of the issuing customs office pertaining to the state district. In your case, it was Simbach on the Inn (river). If you happen to still have that plate which came with the car, it's quite a bonus. The plaque stamp would look just like the round stamp on that receipt.
I went through the same procedure and received similar plates when I took a European delivery of a US-spec 1981 Scirocco right in Osnabrueck, Germany, and still have the oval plate on the garage wall.
2. I looked up where Eggenfelden was, being in the German state of Bavaria, between Munich and Passau. Simbach is a bit south, right on the Inn river which forms the border with Austria.
3. That bottom line on the dealer invoice is "Matr. lt. Schein 7885". abbreviated for "Materialien laut Schein 7885" (makes sense now, yeti!). This is "materials per receipt 7885". It's quite likely the receipt 7885 was the receipt issued by the dealer's parts department for your package tray purchase, and simply added to the dealer's total bill so that you only paid once at the main cashier.
What was your top speed during your highway run? A solid 80 to 85mph, I'd guess? |

If you're not already familiar with the following page, it shows the month of manufacture by chassis number. Yours is 0205179 so it was made at the end of the 1st week in May 1963. It languished somewhere for two months before it was purchased by the original owner.

Funny that a bulb would fail withing the first 3 months. _________________ I'd be UNSTOPPABLE if not for Law Enforcement and PHYSICS.
I recycle old cars and parts, other than when I rot, that's as Green as I am going to get.
Thanks to my Tesla driving neighbors, I feel more relaxed driving my SUBURBAN and old VW's.
