I am wondering how the air cleaner bowl is held to the intake tube.
I have what I believe to be, an original early '53 ( 25hp) cleaner setup for my July 53 SC but I can't figure out how it will keep together, I have no straps or clamps. it looks like this one mentioned in another topic.

There is a thumbscrew with a threaded stud that comes up from the bottom.

Thanx a lot Everett. I just checked my cleaner. Stupid me! Embarassed I never ever turned mine over because of the oil inside. Mine is missing the wing bolt, but no problem to fix something for it. looks like a winged nut like on the seats, I have plenty of those, together with threaded stock will make a nice as stock bolt.

thx for the additional info, I have the second style.
yeah sometimes it would be better thinking before talking... Embarassed Laughing
I have been wondering about that bloody detail for 6 months now, without ever turning it upside down, owing to the mess of oily sludge inside. all the other ( and they are plenty ) of VW aircleaners I worked on over the past 20 yrs had clamps or straps, so I didn't even bother to think about anything different...shame on me Rolling Eyes Smile

I don't know the year to year changes on these but from what I have seen, the round pressings are earlier as they all have a 26A part # and not a 211 part #.

I have seen the "3-spoke" style with both 29A and 211 part #s.

26A:

211:

These both have the 3-spoke style bowl

Rod is M6.
Total rod length: 125mm
Ring distance from the wing nut end: 65mm

Look-a-here ! Very Happy
I am so glad the PO and I kept all the loose nuts and bolts, so I found the original winged stud among them.
The ltters and numbers are the same as on panelvan's.
my air cleaner came with a July 53 truck and is believed to be original.

Probably another stupid question, but anybody knows the part to the left of the air cleaner ?

Everett, D train and Panelvan, what are the Years of your trucks ? obviously
panelvan's and my cleaner are of the same style and D train's and Everett's are. I reckon Everett, it's from a 55 truck ? thanx for getting the details on the stud. I can compare the dimensions with the stud from my cleaner, maybe they are different too.

ed: just reread and panelvan stated 3.53

Maybe they had 2 suppliers and it is not a year-to-year thing?

I believe that is something home-made.

I do not have a truck, these are just loose air cleaners I own or have owned.
I believe the 26A one is from a Barndoor Truck but the other air cleaner may be from a later Bus since the wing nut air cleaners were used on all Buses for a while after the Barndoor era.

Some changes from Progressive Refinements are below.

Change from 2-piece pipe like what Brian posted above to the solid pipe:

End of wing nut air cleaner:
