cleaned it today. clearcoated the remnants of the original decal. I have a replacement repro decal, but I want to save the original and detail it later.
obviously the first design of the cleaner was a fail. moisture and condensed water can easily get into the oil bowl, rusting out the bottom, as can be seen in my oil bowl. oil sludge had trapped water.
probably why they changed the design to the larger top cover.

concerning the unidentified part, it is definitely not home made. square weld nut, pressed dimples, elongated holes, black paint like on VW engine tinware/ air cleaner.
I straightened it out some what. I believe the ends should be straight.
Anybody knows what this is for ?
does this belong to the air cleaner or could this be an accelerator foot rest ? _________________ Hotrods, Fords, Veedubs and Triumph Twins !

I looked at one of mine and could not find a date stamp.
It's possible I missed it.
My earlier "54/55" information was really just posting pictures of the 54-56 style rather than the 53 or earlier styles you also see in this thread.
I'll have to remember now they are late 1954-56 because of the Progressive Refinements pages I posted - The air cleaner style I posted with the 1-piece neck and the wing nut bottom went from 29 Nov. 54 through 26 Sept. 56. _________________ How to Post Photos

As far as I know - yes.
