Is it needed to replace my CV Drive shaft if it is throwing a little grease, or can I just install a new clamp? (Also, It is leaking on the left OUTER joint boot). Thanks! _________________ 1972 Karmann Ghia Coupe- all stock

Check and make sure all your bolts are tight, the grease will spin out if loose, happened to me. _________________ --------------------------

Just make sure you use the right tool or you'll have stripped heads and bigger issues. Should be a 12 point (spline) 8mm. Some call it a triple square. If you use a 6 point (TORX) you will most likely strip them. Clean the bolts out then tap the socket in to assure its fully seated before cranking the bolt.
Check first though, the PO could have changed the spline bolts to TORX bolts. |

Is the boot cracked or are the bolts loose? How long has it been this way?
If this started happening recently I would suggest taking the CV joint apart, clean and inspect it, and then regrease it (with the correct CV joint grease) and put it back on, with a new boot if that was the problem.
If it's been leaking like this for a while then I would suggest a new CV joint.
I usually replace the boots as soon as they crack. But the first one I replaced and regreased the CV joint on was cracked when I bought the car. About a year later the balls popped out of the CV joint while I was driving. I put on a new CV joint and clean it out, change the boot and regrease it whenever the boot cracks and I haven't had a problem since. _________________ If a water cooled engine cools its water with air, isn't it just an overcomplicated air cooled engine? |

The owner whom I purchased it from said that he had them "serviced"... I would take that to mean he had them taken apart, cleaned, and regreased. Up until that point I have no idea how long it has been doing this. As of right now, it seems to me that it has only been that way for a couple of weeks, because there isnt all that much grease. _________________ 1972 Karmann Ghia Coupe- all stock

If it's throwing grease from the skinny end of the boot, around the axle end, it may have been over stuffed with grease when serviced.

Good point. I'd take it off and see if any dirt got in there. If so, I'd clean it out and regrease. But if it's simply over packed and grease is squirting out all you need to do is take out a little grease and put it back together. _________________ If a water cooled engine cools its water with air, isn't it just an overcomplicated air cooled engine? |

Just wonderng, do they even sell a more common bolt vs the the one vw uses? |

You can replace them with torx but you'll still need the spline socket to get them out. I assume they have the spline bolts still. |

The torque spec on those cv joint bolts are around 18ft lbs..
If you do not use the proper TORX you will end up messing up the fit.... If you do not have a good feel for torquing stuff then you need to get an inexpensive Inch Ounce torque wrench.
You will be surprised how tight you need to get those bolts..
And if you do not get them tight? They will come loose, not a good thing.
Allen's are awful... If your allen is worn you will end up messing up the allen screw... A good vice grip will get the bad fitted ones out.
I have ordered cv joint boot kits from various parts houses, some come with new allens and others with TORX... Torx for me!

Most are splines (12 point) but I just replaced some and had a choice between spline or TORX. I got spline because I wasn't replacing them all but when I do the next full service On the cv's I will replace with TORX. They are available Randy but it seems most stick with spline bolts. I just hate the soft spline sockets I'm finding and I have good hardened TORX tools. |

The reason the 8mm triplesquares are used is that they are pretty hard to strip out. I don't think I have even seen a new allen bolt ina set in the past 10 years but I mostly do the bus ones. |

You are correct, my bad!
I was thinking TORX but meant spline....
