Pros and cons... What is the low down on this engine. Would it be a nice upgrade for a 1963? Looking for a reliable driver with a pep and maybe some growl from the tailpipe. Nothing extreme just fun _________________ 1966 Beetle Pearl White |

I vote for 1600 single port but use all the late cooling tins and oil cooler. Keep an eye out for overheating as your deck lid may not be louvered. Hey capt. I used to live in Marietta and worked for Lockheed back in the 80s. Small world. |

If it's in good condition ,why not use it? It's a bigger, more modern motor than many. Should have all the enhancements that the vw type one evolution went through into the 70's. _________________ 1958 Karmann Ghia owner |

Actually in my rough and rowdy days I moved frequently the apartments along windy hill rd. also Smyrna. What I remember is all the nice young women there. Lotsa good times till they layed off a few thousand of us. Oh well . I had friends in Woodstock too. I drove a 63 vw camper back then. |

Pro's?
The case is made from a better alloy said to be more resistant to stud pulling.
Bigger oil pump and dual oil pressure relief valves for better oil control.
Bigger valves and manifolding increases HP and breathing at higher RPM's.
Cons?
Being '73 at the newest, who knows how many times the case has been rebuilt or line bored.
Dual ports/more HP/Doghouse cooler etc and your decklid may have to be propped open or louvers added to cool it adequately.
34PICT carbs are smog carbs, so they can be a challenge to make work well on a modified engine. _________________ -Bruce
