i've been finding water under the passenger side back seat of my 73 super beetle after rain i believe it might be from the eyebrow vent behind the rear window. has anyone got any ideas on common leaks and possible ways to fix it?

thanks Smile

Hi,

it is difficult to tell the source because the water moves around when the car is driving. Is the rest of the floor really absolutely dry?

However, the vents would be my last guess because either the death foam traps water or it drips on the inside of the side panels into the heater channels. Most probable are leaks of the sealing between the body and chassis, next guess are the window sealings (especially front and rear - is the trunk behind the rear seat really dry? (then the rear window is probably tight). Does the car have a sliding roof? Then check the draining.

Check if water collects only while driving in the rain but also just by sitting outside in the rain.

Good luck

the rest of the floor is dry when parked and there isn't any sign of it running from front to rear.

thank you mate i'd say you're probably right about the sealing between body and chassis. the trunk is dry and the roof is a hardtop.

she isnt driven to much at the moment so the water would be collecting when its parked.

thank you very much mate ill have to wait for it to rain again and start looking Smile

If the water is collecting while it is parked, I highly doubt it is the pan gasket that is leaking. Maybe you can sit inside the car while someone sprays a hose in different areas.

Probably the rear window seal.

Water on the floor in the rear is often from the window seals. Make sure you check the padding and carpet in the package tray for moisture.

Also, just in case... the inner rear wheel arches especially at the join with the floor pan are often rusted and filled and often not really watertight 'fixes'. There can also be rusted sections around the body to fender bolts which are 'hidden' by the fender welt, but can channel water into the back. A shitload of water can come in there during driving and a bit sitting depending on how it's all channeled... If it is really just from sitting then check the door and window seals.

the rear trunk area is dry so the rear window is fine but i haven't looked at the side windows or the door seals. i'll get in while its raining next and have a look around. i'll jack her up as well and look for rust around the body fender join. it rained heavily late last might and i had a car cover over it and there wasn't as much water as their usually is so maybe it is just a seal !

thanks for the help everyone!

Windshield, lower corners.

Either the seal is shrunk and dry rotted and/or the metal is rusted.

There are factory paint drain holes that allow water in when the seal goes bad.

I was happy to see that the factory drain holes were not enlarged and horrible rotten as well.

If you want to find the leak, VW put out a dealer-level service manual for how to do so. Of course, I've seen this posted before in water leak threads and have even posted it myself and the OP's never seem to bother with it. For my money, though, it's probably a better idea to be systematic according to the OEM's techniques than to solicit lists of popular leak spots, no?
