After many a year dreaming and scheming, it is going to happen. The tube is on order, I have an 091/1 midshift trans, IRS torsion, and a complete sandail for gutting. Why gut the complete sandrail? There are a few reasons: 1. the whole thing is twisted, 2. rust has made quite a few tubes thin 3. i would have to cut off the entire roll cage and rebuild it for proper headroom 4. no cargo capacity, and finally, 5. I hate the swingaxle. This rail see's about as much time on road as it does off road. the swingaxle is fine for just cruising, but any sort of spirited driving on or off road leaves a lot to be desired and is not upgradable without converting it anyway. Also, this killer deal on an 091/1 showed up and I couldn't pass it by.
should i go turbo 1835 vw or turbo 2.3 ford for the powerplant?
Tubing should arrive on Dec. 10th!

So of the tube finally arrived, now the fun can begin! tomorrow i will be hauling the transaxle and torsion housing down, get it cleaned up and the front of the horns plated off, and start some sort of mount for the 091/1. Its about time that tube got here! This is what kept me entertained while I waited for steel.

For now the 1835 that is in my currently running rail. Its kinda worn so it will probably get some cheap cylinders, a hotter cam and a better exhaust. the heads might even get a valve job. I just want to get this rail on the road ASAP as the weather this winter has been very, very mild. I was still driving my rail in January with no snow whatsoever. It was 60 degrees last week.
Next winter though, it will be a turbo EFI 1835. I like this weird air cooled stuff. |

3d printers are unreal. I waste a lot of time on kickstarter rooling over the 3d makers there. _________________ rant _ classified ads with out pics are almost worthless |

Pony up a few hundred bucks and build one! seriously, these things rock! I have a large one I'm building to print stuff like custom gauge clusters and brackets. It will be able to print anything that will fit in a 12"x12"x18" area.
the shop I work for bought this one from me and we have been printing stuff like molds for urethane parts and concrete stamps. |

My department up here at Michigan Tech is working on one that can print a 8 for in diameter part. It works like a record player. The printing surface revolves and the printing head changes its hight and its radius from the center of the rotating printing surface. Pretty unique system.
IRS, post lots of pics of what you come up with for transmission mounts. I'm looking to unload my T1 I got years back and drop a late 4 speed Vanagon transmission in as well. _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

I swear I will do a writeup on this as soon as time allows. So much has been happening that I have almost forgotten to eat a couple times. Its been nuts. It went from six 20' chunks of 1.5" x .103" tube to a roller in less than a week. I'm just going to go pop the frame off the jig after i post this and start tabbing it for the floor, gas tank, seats, seat belts and steering column. That stuff should be done tomorrow...ish.
In the mean time, here is another teaser. I will take a break on it Monday and actually post some pics for you guys.

Hey, would you be willing to take a measurement for me? I'm interested how much longer the vanagon is than the bug. If you could line up the two bolt front mount in your swing axle with the front face of the vanagon, and measure the distance between the face of the bug and vanagon bell housings. That would be awesome. _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

Fwiw, it doesn't have to be super accurate. Within an 1/8th or 1/4 of an inch would be plenty good. |
can do! i have the swingaxle and bus trans sitting side by side right now. i'll get that a little later today. |

Thanks man, I appreciate it. Oh, and could you also get the depth of the bottom two bell housing bolt holes? Sorry, lots of demands. Hahaha _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

Yeah, I can get them too. I ended up not going to my other shop the other day so I still dont have it measured. I have to go up there today to help my friend with his rail for a bit. |

well a lot of stuff has been happening. the sandrail is now past the roller stage and i am working on controls as well as sheetmetal. the engine and trans are in it for mockup. I recieved a pile of parts ranging from rear disk brakes to LED light bars. I was making great progress until this week.
I applied for a job with Dark Horse Customs in Bozeman, Mt. and found out they want me up there ASAP as their current fabricator put in his two weeks notice.
needless to say, I'm PUMPED!! There are a few pics in my gallery if you want to see them, but for now here is one last one in the current shop. the next series of pics will have some cool toys in the backround.
