Took off her steelies and wide whites to get them over to the House of Ghia so we could finish the rims properly. My water based / clear coat job with the tires on the rim wasn't so good. I got a year before they started rusting again.
But what was so surprising - I had a little shudder at different speeds with my stock wheels. With der faux fuchs, they were gone!
I would have never known my steel wheels were out of round. While balanced at the tire store, the difference was seriously palpable.
Have any of you sent your wheels off for professional straightening before refinishing?

Not exactly experience with VW wheels, but I recently had the wheels on my wife's old Boxster professionally refinished.
One of the rear rims had a pretty large bend in it which was likely damaged from hitting a deep pothole.
The shop was able to straighten the rims first, and then repaint them in the original color and style of finish.
Actually, paying someone to have the wheels refinished was not something that I had planned on doing so I hadn't done any prior research or pricing.
It was just something that came up when I went to the tire shop to replace the rear tires a couple of months ago and I inquired about finding an inexpensive replacement rim for the damaged one.
The tire shop mentioned that they could send them out to a local vendor they knew that would repair and refinish them for less than the cost of a replacement.
As a result, I paid $200 per wheel for the straightening and refinishing, but I'm confident that it could be done for less if one took the time to do a little research.
Unfortunately, I am not much on actually completing many of the projects that I begin.
Considering that this car is my wife's DD, I just figured it would be best to swallow the cost and have them completed in a timely fashion.
In the end, the shop did nice work, my wife had her car back as quickly as possible, and the car looks and handles much better now.
As the saying goes, "Happy wife leads to happy life.". |
