A stock engine would have a generator, it may have been danger to an alt. need to see a pic to know for sure. Use a volt meter to check the out out of power with the engine is running.

If you have a generator, one or both of the brushes that ride the commutator
may have shortened to the point that the charge circuit is "broken". i.e. open
If you have a modern alternator it is two brushes as well, riding on two
"slip rings", they too are perishable items and fail(shorten) eventually.
This causes open charge circuit, the battery discharges running the ignition
and all other electrical load demands, til it signs off, and bus "dies".

Umm, is the charge light coming on? Does it work when key is first turned to ON position? How old is battery? I just had to add water to mine.

Orig is a gen & dont need chg lite to work. If a gen check output at regulator, term that goes to batt,, when not running should be voltage there all time, if so most likely the reg bad.Meter voltage at this point with eng running, speed up , if voltage dont increase, back to reg.

You should get a charging voltage of somewhere around 14V when the engine is revved. You do have a VOM don't you? IMO an analog meter with a 20v DC scale it the best, but hard to find. Many prefer digital meters, but it is hard to get a reading if the voltage is fluctuating as will happen if you have a mechanical regulator.

If your battery is getting run down, how do you get your engine to start?
