Hi all now I'm talking about the long spring and piston ( oil pressure relief system) i have two different stock types of piston hers as can been seen in the photo. The shorter spring goes with the top hat type piston (witch is longer than the plan piston) and the longer stock spring goes with the shorter plan piston so over all the total length including the spring and piston are the same but I have just got a new spring and piston from vwheritage and as you can see the spring is much longer than the stock ones. So my questions are
1) have I just ordered the wrong spring?
2) should I use the top hat piston or the plan piston?

Long Story short, After market springs, with different lengths/ Tensions cause the oil to be routed to the oil cooler at different pressures. Typicaly used as a band-aid fix in worn engines, causing the oil warmup time to be much longer, which make it seem "like the engine is fine" if you have worn bearings etc..

The top hat style one, I believe is for the Single relief case.

Since i'm unsure if you have a single or dual relief case (pretty sure you may have dual)

Check, there is the piston & spring towards the rear of the case (by the belt pulley) This one controls Oil route for cooling (or bypass cooling when cold)

Here are the STOCK piston and springs, These are the correct length, and tension. I would highly recommend getting STOCK ones.

as for the rear of the case, on the flywheel end, there is a shorter spring, and a regular piston that dumps oil to the sump if the pressure is too high (early morning startup/cold engine.

Sometimes these springs over 40+ years get weak. It's best to get OEM stock New ones.

Here are links to the parts below.

Pistons, same for each bore. (get 2 if you have a dual relief case)

Short spring for the flywheel end of the case.

Long spring for the pulley side of the case.

You can replace your slotted caps, with these they make installation much easier.

get two

Cheers for the links mate.
Yes it is a brand new dual relief case running a external filter and a 30mm Schadek oil pump with a pressure relief cover set to 60 psi. So im not off shopping for two stock springs and two plan pistons Smile

Good. Get those two pistons & Springs.

New case? I assume new engine?

30mm pump is a bit large, just make sure to watch your pressures and temps.

If needed switch to a lighter weight oil.

I am building a new 1600 with a new case, And installing a VW Of Mexico filter pump (which has 30mm gears) Im going to test it with 30 weight, but if it bypasses the cooler too much, Ill switch to a 20 weight. etc..

You also need to make sure you are using the correct length and strength of pressure relief spring. VW Official Service Manual for the 1970s Bus has a section on that.
