2trackrat is right, your frame started life as a SandHawk brand frame. The top of the cage looks pretty sketchy to me. The height of the top is probably about 4" too much. About 1/2 way between where it is now and the top of your head as shown in that 1st pic would be a good height over your head.

I suggest cutting off everything above the top rail of the frame and starting over. Look at Chenowth and Berrien frames for design ideas. The uprights at the front of the cage should land on top of the rail right above the inverted 'Vee' of tubes under the rail. They should lean back at least some and not be straight up and down.

That is pretty much the idea. I want to try to get the front seats forward enough to sneak a little double seat in the back.

I took a few pictures this morning, but probably won't have a chance to post until tomorrow.

Hey Dave with your shop tools why dont ya buy some DOM and just stretch it out about 10" or so? Your going to be cutting the roof off anyway and fab'ing a new top. That would give the back seat a little leg room so the kids could ride back there a little longer with not much effort?

I upgraded my dodge Sweptline 318 points to GM HEI and it was a huge improvement. How about pertronix and a hot coil on the VW?

Pertronix - performance gain is from the points not needing adjustment. Not a HEI by any means, but no more points adjustment.

Your shift coupler may need replaced. They get tired over time. Easy and cheap.

Not an off roader, but I have seen LOTS of trick air cleaner set ups. Do a search.

Displacement - only way to know what you have is to pull a head and measure.

Is the oil cooler stuck in front of the fan intake? Yeah - you want to do something different.

As far as the block off ports on the shroud, supposedly you are to only partially restrict that, but have seen lots of cars that just cap them off completely.

Had a great ride all over Superstition most of the day with my daughter Saturday. I'll get some pictures up.
Perfect weather, but carb got full of sand. Sorry excuse for an air cleaner, plus oil from the filter everywhere for the sand to stick to. Mad It's disassembled soaking in carb dip now. Need to get a good covered air cleaner. Local VW shop owner passed away, and the family is selling off his stock. Need to catch them there or get with John from aircooled. Also going to check jetting while I'm in there. Ran decent before it plugged up, minus a little 009 flat spot. May get a SVDA or just richen it up.

Weber DGAV 33B1

Need to get after the brakes, still spongy, need a proper clean and flush, as well as an axle seal replaced.

Picked up a Mityvac for bleeding, etc, been putting it off forever.

Muffler fell off, more not-done-quite-right stuff to fix. Which reminds me, all the exh tubes are loose...clamp 'em, tack, 'em, weld 'em, or leave 'em? I got hung up on the rear, I think I'd like to move the exhaust up and reduce rear overhang... lower tubes are kinda messed up anyway.

Got a larger leftover steering wheel from one of my Sweptlines to install...lift of little things ot check and do as long as my arm. Spares/tools box, etc.

Need to do gauges! Tach, temp, and vacuum so I can time/tune it dead nuts...

The 245/16" tires worked ok. 10 ply makes them runflats, too stiff and heavy and bald for ideal performance, but easier to turn than the 33x1250s that were on it. I really want some wide, aggressive 31s or 32s for flotation and traction but don't want to spend the $.

Working on getting my hands on some 14.50 -15 Paddles in a trade. They are ten years old but have been covered and feel pliable...what think ye?

Maybe some spindle mount wheels, going to try to trade in the big Ag tires on the front.

Also in trade a stock 1600DP...which might go nicely in a '66 Beetle complete minus engine that a friend is giving me...uh-oh, they're multiplying! Wifey's always wanted a New Beetle, but she might have to settle for an Old Beetle. Laughing

Today I went by Edge Enterprises (only open on Sat since Ken passed away) and got a ton of stuff. Brake shoes, axle shaft seals, shifter shaft coupling, trans shifter shaft bushing, pulley with timing marks, another 4 point harness, Zenith carb kit, gauges, switches, CV boots, a SuperTrapp, batt ground cable, alt/fan plate (was missing), etc. Now I have enough little projects to last me a couple weeks I think!

Instead of putting on patches.... Why not break it down, do quick sand blast and paint (spray cans of Rustoleum) and start over with reassembly.... There is so much not right, but not really wrong.....

Will also increase value if you decide to part with it...

I will be fixing it up proper this summer when it's too hot to play outside. We live in the desert and play in the desert all the time in the winter, so need to keep it going for winter.

Some friends wanted to go to the desert last minute yesterday, so I slapped the Weber back on with some richer jets.
Of course since we were in a hurry, the starter started misbehaving, maybe the + cable and or dirty cable end contacts. Need to check resistance in the cable and clean everything.
It ran OK kind of on and off, maybe too rich. When it gets in a good mood it has pretty dang good power. It will be nice to get the Zenith on and running perfect.
Repairing the shifting is high priority, it's very frustrating to not be able to find or get into the next gear in the middle of duning and have to stop, roll down, and start all over.
Clutch quit clutching half way through and then mysteriously started working again. No idea what it entails yet, but may have to go in there...

Yeah but ugly can be easily fixed David. I think your going about it in the right way... Get it running good first, get some floatation tires going and the ugly can be tackled in due time. Looking good...
