I would never put anything but expensive VW approved anti freeze in a new TDI but how about the old pre 1992 diesels ?

I use regular off the shelf "good in all makes and models" anti freeze in my current 91 diesel . Am I being penny wise and pound foolish ?

Anyone out there have any long term / high mileage real world results of using non VW anti freeze in their old diesels ?

Can't say about the old diesels, but I can say that the yellow "all makes" coolant works just fine in old and new cars and will even "play nice" with the G12 coolant, unlike the green or red stuff.

I ran the cheapo Diesel antifreeze in my '85 Jetta for 12 years and almost 400,000 kms with no problems.

I've had a number of older diesels, and presently run a 1981 Rabbit Pickup with a Mk 3 diesel. I've always used the yellow/green Prestone. It works great, but always use distilled water only.
