Regrettably...I'm not going to be able to make the scene at the Sand Dunes. My family has scheduled a Boundary Waters canoe trip at the same time and as an All-Star Uncle, I'm going to have to be there instead.

So...I guess I'll be piloting the Bleeding Trout up to Minnesota, where my Bus will be re-introduced to that dreadful thing we call "humidity". I guess that's why there's an icebox in back...

I think that's a good excuse. I absolutely love the boundary waters. Where the pike are as big as you're fishing pole and the mosquitoes never seem to leave you alone.

No dice on a tow bar. The TIME is coming closer. I think we will have to have close registration for the UFO tower by 6-30. So lets "wrench it up" and get the mighty warriors of the wasteland ready to assault the summit. I might just do the whole thing on street tires...cause I can!

Don't know if we have to put a deadline on registration. We have an open restistration at the UFO tower. I told her we were expecting around 20 buses, she said there would be plenty of space.

As of now I do not have a bus to go on the trip with, since my crank decided to break on the way to Denver on Saturday. It is in the shop waiting it's turn to be rebuilt, it is #5 in line. Might be done but it also might not. If not I'll try to ride shotgun with Bubba.

Good visit at the VW shop today. Looks like my new engine will be a 2175cc and he is shooting to have it done before the Muster!!!!!

If my engine gets done I will be doing this event with my Hankooks.

Yikes Rich...that is sad news on the crank failure. I never have any luck with Big bore combos in terms of longevity. They make interstate travel possible with todays high speed travel. maybe keep a 1500 sp around for emergency use??

That did come up in discussion today at the shop. I'm sure i could have a long block build on the inexpensive side. I have most of the parts and a spare set of Kadrons hanging out, hmm... gonna need some heads...

I am in with the Syncro! 66 is still some time away from being ready, since I fractured the big toe of my right foot and corrective nasal surgery.
I had all of the front end work done and new suspension so the Syncro is ready to go, less a pump for the sandy sections.

Sounds good PW, this way we can tell the Park Ranger you're our rescue vehicle. Smile Seems like the rain/snow is ending and the sun is shining. Run off was huge today in Durango. Although the whole region needs the water it would be great if the water crossings were not 24" deep when we got there. Im optimistic on my bus being ready and looking forward to this adventure.

I also haven't bought a compressor yet, I think I'm gonna get the slime one. Reviews are ok and how often am I really gonna use it. Most likely just this trip.

So, It is quite possible you will have a crew from Oklahoma venturing up towards the NorthWest to cross the pass with the group. Nothing is nailed down quite yet. Still figuring out logistics and trying to make it fit with other summer vacations that are all ready planned. The buses here, if all went, would be a '79 westy, '76 westy and '73 westy. All are stock height and all are running General Grabbers. We are currently building a fresh 2.0 L for the 73 but it runs fine on the 1.8 that it currently has. Hopefully soon we will be able to put our official notification in that we are definitely in.

How much fuel do you all anticipate we will need for the mountain roads? Are you bringing extra fuel cans? What spare parts would you recommend having on hand?

I will not be bringing extra fuel, The trail should take 3-4 hours. I plan on carrying all the spare parts and tools I would normally carry on a road trip, including tow strap and a compressor.

I'd say it was a good call changing the date. It has been really really wet this weekend, heavy rain and flooding. The spring storms have also brought a lot of snow in the high country (mountains) which has increased the spring run off. If we would have gone this weekend I'm sure we would have been in the rain the whole time and we probably would not have been able to make some of the water crossings. Let's hope the rain lets up for awhile and the sun comes out and melts the snow before we go.
