Vanagon enthusiasts in Austin and Central Texas:
Many times I have heard overtures from other van owners of starting a Vanagon support group for meetups, repair help, parts swaps, and group travel.
At the very least, we can start a thread on The Samba and work from there.
I would love to use this thread to do the following:
1. Folks who live in Austin and Central Texas reply and check-in with their interest;
2. We set two meetup dates over this winter, so we can learn more about each other and generate interest (I propose one in late December, one in early January);
3. We talk about group travel, or wrenching help, or parts swaps.
For the December meetup For the 17 January meetup I would love to gather for lunch at Stiles Switch BBQ at 6610 North Lamar in Austin.
Local meetups take genuine interest and a little bit of work from participants. If you're in the Central Texas area and are interested, please reply to this thread.

I'm in Cedar Park and would be interested in connecting. December and January may be tough for me but if something comes together i'll do my best to be there. _________________ 90 Westy Multivan A/T

Yes--anyone can jump in! Let's see what momentum we can build over the next few days.
I'll still plan to be at Stiles Switch next Saturday, 20 December on Saturday, 17 January, at noon, for BBQ.
C'mon Austin/Texas folks, come on out of the woodwork and signal your interest.

Checking in. Not sure that I'll be able to make next Saturday, but I'm definitely interested in the local network. _________________ '90 Westfalia GL Automatic |

I'm in Houston and would be up for meeting other nearby vanagon owners. This month is out due to holiday travel, but next year would be great.
I am always up for camping and really wish there was a monthly TX bus campout. There are so many parks to explore, especially in the hill country. |

I live in Spring Branch north of San Antonio. I'd be up for some get togethers. I don't think I could make it the 20th for lunch due to work. Please keep me posted. _________________ 84 Westy AKA "Sludge" |

Hi,
We will join you when the Van is registered next month. Held off on registering until it was 25 years old. In Texas you can reg a 25 year old car for 5 years for $50. No smog, no inspection. Have to register it as an antique.
01/05/15 we will be back on the road.
Catch up with you then! |

If you plan to use your van as a daily driver, don't waste your time registering it as a antique vehicle in Texas; it's not a realistic loophole. Here's an excerpt of the usage requirements for antique vehicle status:
"The frame, body and motor are at least 25 years old, and the vehicle is a collector’s item that will be used solely for exhibition, club activities, parades, and other functions of public interest (replicas do not qualify for Antique plates). The vehicle will not be used for regular transportation except when routine maintenance is needed. The vehicle will not carry advertising."
Didn't you say you were going to put a 1.8t in your van? Is that motor less than 25 years old?
(original form online here: http://txdmv.gov/reports-and-data/doc_download/956-vtr-54-antique-vehicle )
BTW all cars in Texas 25 years old or older are exempt from emissions testing.

aircoolers.org looks neat... but I'm just responding to the various comments from Vanagon enthusiasts in Austin and Central Texas.
Looking at the list of VW clubs in Texas alone, it looks like a lot of folks are trying to lay claim to one VW quality or another in terms of authenticity.
Well, let's keep talking.

Update: based on replies here and in PMs it looks like we should cancel any meeting plans for this Saturday (20 December) since folks will be better suited for a meetup in January.
I propose Saturday, 17 January at noon at the aforementioned location (Stiles Switch BBQ in Austin, 6610 North Lamar).
Let's keep the momentum going, and I'll bump this thread as that weekend approaches.
Stay in touch...
