my youngest son Forrest had some control issues! He walked away unhurt but the car did not servive. I witnessed the crash as we were taking dads buggy back to him after Forrest had used it for a few days. I was following him in my car. And yes we were going too fast!

Looks like there was a worse fate available (trees, a drop off) just on the other side of the road...I'd say if you had to crash, you got about the best outcome possible...nobody hurt.
The body isnt beyond repair. Many here have done more with less. Hard to tell about the pan.
Perhaps having junior get involved in making it right might accomplish both a fixed dunebuggy and an increased respect for consequences. |

Last picture with broken air cleaner, crooked roll bar (alignment with windshield), body crack, pretty much tells me body may have to come off and pan need to be checked for straight...

It still looks better than mine, when I got it. It's fixable. Glad everyone is OK. _________________ I'd rather be an hour early than 5 minutes late. (Mine)

here are a few teardown pics
yep it was pretty scary, he hung the tail out comming over the hill, then overcorrected, shot up the bank. while sliding accross the bank the left front wheel caught a large rock embedded in the dirt. car stood up on the rear bumper and did a 1.5 turn piroett on the rear bumper. fell over on its side (drivers) and then flopped back wheels down. Forrest says the scariest part for him is when the battery ripped out of the body and flew right in front of his face. the frame head was torn away on one side and while sitting on 3 wheels the drivers side of the beam was a couple of inches higher on the drivers side. engine, trans and rear wheels were about the only parts that went into new buggy for dad. _________________ pax

About the battery..... POSITIVE HOLD DOWNS..... This is one thing we stress in auto-x tech inspections.... Just because its big, heavy and full or acid and can cause real damage....

Glad the battery didn't hit your son. I see a steel support welded to the torsion tube in your future.

When I went to pass inspection to put our buggy on the road back in late 1990s, that was about the only thing they had me fix: Proper brace to hold battery. At the time, being young and stupid, I thought this was a pretty stupid requirement as it was wedged in the fiberglass hole (std buggy location) and I thought there was no way it could move.
I'm wiser now (at least I like to think so) and after hearing and seeing your story, I'm glad the inspector had me 'fix' this issue.
Glad everyone is ok. |

Dale, Post a pic of a 'positive hold down'. We make all learn something from this accident.

This is what I did on street car build... Has four flat head machine screws through bottom of plate into bodies battery box bottom.... Put "fender washers" under body to prevent pull through.... Bolts that hold bar in place are 5/16 Stainless (corrosion resistant) and locking nuts... Also 1/8 in. rubber pad (sheet material) under battery and hold down bar...
OR you can get some ideas here...
http://images.lmgtfy.com/?q=battery+bracket
On my race car I made square frame out of 3/4 angle that fit top of battery without contacting posts, and used 2 3/8 all-thread to secure to body and ran a strap under box to "connect" the two all-thread so they would not be able to "pull through" body (nuts on both side of body so rods would not drop out - makes them like solid anchor studs) ... Put wing nuts on tops of rods for easy removal, and just to take a stab at tech inspectors "safety wired" wing nuts... Sorry don't have a pic of race car installation...

I was hesitant to open this thread due to not knowing a outcome. But glad to see your son is in good health. The buggy is fixable.
NHRA and IHRA rules call for 2 - 3/8 bolts holding the battery in with a strap over the battery, just like what Dale shows. I used to think it was overkill until I saw some wrecks and the battery's flopped out. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

My batteries have always sat in a 1x1 angle steel frame welded to either the torsion housing or the chassis with 3/8 ros and a steel bar across the top. Even fender washers will pull through glass. I like knowing my battery will stay put no matter what.

if you look at the tear down pics you can see the batt well is missing the bottom, i belive the p.o. cut out the bottom to clear trailing arm. the battery was still bolted to plywood bottom that had been fiberglassed in. tore away from body and inspection revealed a very poor glass job. p.s. did i mention that my dad had only had the buggy for about 2 months before this happened. My dad was PI$$ED! and yes Forrest was very involved in the replacment rbuild. hey Dale nice hold down! _________________ pax

I had issues in race car of battery box hitting IRS arm also, cut about two inches off bottom of box and glassed in new bottom (making sure glass work was proper).....
People who do not take time to learn about fiberglass work cause more grief, and its so simple once you understand process... Only thing I don't like about glass work is the finishing (grinding and sanding)...
