Split steering column?

Has anyone seen a split column with this solid looking weld section instead of the two pieces of metal? Any help Thanks.

I have it in my '66 standard beetle. In standard model (111), vw used it till 08/1966.
Maybe not the best picture but shows my steering wheel tube. I can take better pictures if you want.
