When the steering box is bolted up and tie rods aren't hooked up. Would the pitman arm hit the frame head? Because that's what's happening to me. Trying to figure out how much to cut tie rods for the narrowed.
Also the pitman arm is funky. Me nor some of my friends have seen one with ears like mine. Which the ear is the first place that hits. If the ear wasn't there it looks like the arm is real close to the edge of the frame head.

I'm not sure the Pitman arm limits the steering on any Beetle....it might be the stop on the front wheels that determines the steering lock. _________________ .ssS! |

Yes, it will hit the frame head with no tie rods. The steering stop is built into the link/king pin carrier (knuckle). There's a spot on the carrier that hits a spindle bolt. _________________ Joey

The steering box is also limited by the worm and roller in the box. I have never had one hit the tunnel though, but your travel is limited by the spindles. Did you have to move the box over when you narrowed the beam 8 inches?

I'd be more concerned with the crack running through your frame head. Do that first then worry about bolt on parts. |

As said above, the pitman arm WILL hit the frame head without the tie-rods installed on early king/link pin front ends. Later model (68-77?) ball joint front ends have a stop built into the pitman arm |

My pitman arm is the same (july 1954) with "ears" and as wrote before - the limitation are at the wheels. _________________ 1954 Beetle - running - Went to HO 17

Those "lugs" on the Pitman arm were dropped on 8 Feb 1955. In Progressive Refinements, they are called "lifting cams". Their function was to provide a point of leverage for a tie rod end removal tool. _________________ "Criticism comes easier than Craftsmanship"
